I have seen anti-Russian racism all day at work against my closest coworker who is Russian. This is at a school and is because kids (even or especially teenager kids) do not really understand what is happening and just kind of go with "Russians are evil". She and her family left specifically because they did not like Yeltsin or Putin, and hate this invasion. She is tough as nails, and would usually just laugh off those remarks by dumb kids who don't know anything, but she has been in tears all day, because this is so prevalent among kids that she knows that her own child is facing the same in school from the kids there. I have seen (and sometimes helped) her confiscate knives - and on one occasion a fucking axe - that dumb kids have brought to school to show off or threaten people with. Her facial expression barely changed from a slightly annoyed smile while doing so. An absolute fortress of a human being, and she has been crying all day because her son will have to face this, and the part of her family that remains in Russia will be hit first by the sanctions. I fucking hate this.

I fully admit that I didn't think Russia would ever actually invade Ukraine, and I was totally and completely wrong. But in my defense, I was wrong because it seemed completely insane, and it is completely insane. I thought maybe they would go into Donbass and push the contact line back to the official borders at the absolute worst, but this goes far beyond that. It's completely illegal. I thought a mainland China attack on Taiwan was far more likely than this.

"we don't think sanctions will do what we need them to" "we will impose the harshest sanctions" HOW can this be two concurrent thoughts. Either they work and imposing them will make Putin back down, or they're useless and NATO is committing to abandoning Ukraine. Of course, Biden can't say the last part because it will ensure no democrat ever holds office on anything more important than county school board ever again.

Ukrainian men banned from leaving country - FBC News
All Ukrainian men aged between 18 to 60 are now banned from leaving the country, Ukraine’s state border guard service (DPSA) says. It adds the measure is aimed at “guaranteeing Ukraine’s defence and the organisation of timely mobilisation”. The temporary ban will remain in force for the duration of martial law declared on Thursday morning.
You will soon start to see near-enthusiastic shows of support of Russia coming from the diplomatic channels of AES/AES-adjacent/Global South nations, almost exclusively the heavily sanctioned and economically isolated ones (Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, to name a few). Understand they have next to zero choice in this matter as Russia is quite literally the only major power willing to engage in regular economic and defence exchanges with these nations. If they suddenly took a principled stance and told Russia to go fuck themselves, they'd be thrown to the wolves of the US and forced to lose pretty much everything.

The sanctions Biden is announcing rn are laughable. To say nothing of him keeping mum that they'll keep buying Russian oil, the imports of which have only increased. The US has already basically fled Ukraine, showing it's worth nothing to the West. It was worth something in its role as anti-Russia, which seems to be coming to an end.

From all the awful war takes everywhere, the worst one has to be "crazy evil putin" wanting to take the Baltic states or Stans next. Imagine how fucking stupid someone has to be to just ignore the hundreds of years of shared history between Ukraine and Russia, and also the obvious geopolitical angle with NATO. No Putin isn't crazier than Bush or Obama and he won't take anything more because Ukraine has a special status. I don't understand why westernoid brains has to always go full manichaeism mode with the good guys and the bad guys idea, just say that you disagree with Putin and that you can't find Ukraine on a map
Dunno why but I tuned into the US White House press briefing and this spokesperson said, basically verbatim: "strategic success in the 21st century isn't about grabbing land anymore; that's what Putin has done. Instead, it's about economic strength, ... and it's about your story — who you are and what your values are"

honestly, the best thing Ukraine can do is surrender. they can't win, nobody is coming to help them, all the copium in the world won't do anything to stop the Russian advance. but, by fighting, more Ukrainians die needlessly in a war that's a foregone conclusion, Russia will win. much like Denmark did in WW2 when Germany invaded, sometimes knowing when not to fight isn't a bad idea when the alternative is masses of dead conscripted young boys and civilians
What I love about this, and by love I mean absolutely abhor, is that on :reddit-logo: and other places I frequent that, alas, tend to be full of libs, anything negative about this war is Russian propaganda. A jet accidentally yeets a missile into a neighbourhood? Must be Russian (even though it's a Ukranian model jet). Any indication that Ukraine may have been on the back foot at some point during this invasion? Russian bot propaganda, don't listen to it, Ukraine bodied Russia obviously. Mentioning that, with the original conflict in the Donbass, the Ukranian government was even more brutal than this invasion, and that this invasion has been positively surgical compared to most? WHAT TIME IS IT IN MOSCOW, COMRADE?!?
