- Games where an emulated console version outclasses the PC port?

- Minecraft Is Being Ported To Dreamcast And GameCube | Time Extension
Minecraft, a titan of the video game industry with over 300 million copies sold since its release in 2011, is set to expand its legacy by being ported to two iconic consoles from the past: the Sega Dreamcast and the Nintendo GameCube. This news was announced by A Flock of Meese, a developer known for indie game development efforts.
The port is an unofficial venture, not endorsed by Mojang or Microsoft, which holds the intellectual property rights. A Flock of Meese has been active in social media discussions, showcasing their dedication to recreating Minecraft's unique experience on these retro systems. They've emphasized an intention to replicate mechanics closely while adding a fresh touch through emergent gameplay features.
Background On The Port
- This isn't the first time Minecraft has reached Sega consoles; fans also have access to ClassiCube, a fan-made sandbox game for Dreamcast based on Creative Mode from the original Minecraft.
Implications Of The Port
- Bringing Minecraft's immersive crafting experience to the Dreamcast and GameCube promises a unique opportunity for fans of these consoles. The challenge here might be adapting the game's mechanics onto hardware significantly more limited than its current-gen platforms.
Thoughts And Discussion
- What are your thoughts on this port? Do you believe it will breathe new life into these consoles or fall short due to hardware limitations?
- Would you consider revisiting Minecraft on a retro console, or do you think it's better suited for modern hardware with enhanced visuals and capabilities?
- What’s Your Oldest System?
when did you get it and why? how often do you use it?
If you don’t own a retro system or console, what is the oldest system you emulate or which system would you like to own in the future?
—
For me, my oldest system is an Atari 800xl (i’m counting early home computers). I purchased it on a whim when Netflix’s Bandersnatch interactive movie was briefly popular. I was studying (and still am) computer science and was curious on what you could all do on a home computer from the early 80s. Turns out, quite a lot and I’ve had a lot of fun sifting through the 50+ floppies i have finding everything from home finance software, a plethora home brew games, and even floppy magazines (a bunch of articles on a floppy. not sure the proper name)
when i first got it i was on it more than my modern computer, but after moving it has been gathering some dust in its box. i’m hoping to eventually find a home for it in my home so i can use it more.
a fun thing of note is that it still has the saran wrap on its chrome parts, and it has a Sears Service sticker on the bottom of it when one of the previous owners had it serviced.
- News Shadowrun-Style Action RPG 'Secret Of The Four Winds' Is A Sega CD Game On Cartridge | Time Extensionwww.timeextension.com Shadowrun-Style Action RPG 'Secret Of The Four Winds' Is A Sega CD Game On Cartridge
Promising new action RPG is up for pre-order now
Promising New Action RPG: The Secret of the Four Winds is an upcoming action role-playing game (RPG) that's capturing attention as a unique addition to the retro gaming scene. Developed by Kai Magazine Software, known for its work on homebrew games for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, this new title combines elements from classic franchises like Final Fantasy, Snatcher, and Shadowrun into an immersive storyline.
Featuring slick animated cut-scenes and detailed environments, it's clear that the team has put considerable effort into creating a visually appealing experience.
A standout feature is the custom board included in the cartridge, which houses an audio enhancement chip capable of delivering music quality on par with a Sega CD/Mega-CD. This innovative solution allows players to enjoy CD-quality soundtracks without needing additional hardware, enhancing the gaming experience significantly.
However, it's worth noting that while the game supports both the Mk1 and Mk2 versions of the Genesis/Genius CD (the cartridge version), its compatibility with the Genesis 3 system is limited. Moreover, playing the game might require disconnecting the Sega CD if you're aiming for the full CD-quality audio experience.
You can pre-order now: The Secret of the Four Winds has been made available for pre-order, offering different regional variants to cater to a wide audience. For an enhanced collection experience, there's also a collector's edition that comes with additional goodies.
Is the enhanced audio one of the main draws of this game for you?
- Rage (Xbox360)
I've spent four hours playing Rage today via the Xbox Series backwards compatibility. (Is it emulation or real hardware?)
Anyway, for an Xbox360 game I think this looks really good and still holds up today. The speedy loading times certainly help as well.
I did try and play a while ago on the PS3. I don't know if Rage was pushing the PS3 to the limit, but as you turned around, you would catch models and textures loading in. Apparently you could alleviate this a bit by installing an SSD but you're still limited by the PS3's older SATA connection.
Having played this on my Series X, I don't know if the Xbox Series is almost void of this because of the modern hardware or if the Xbox360 version was actually the better machine with this game engine.
I completed Rage 2 a year or so ago when it was given away free on the Epic Game Store and loved it. The original game is essentially the same but on a much smaller scale. It's a balanced gameplay of driving and FPSs sections.
I LOL'd on my first encounter when I've if the bad guys shouted, "Where's that wanker!" 😆

- Upcoming ANBERNIC RG40XX Handheld “Leaks” | Retro Dodoretrododo.com Upcoming ANBERNIC RG40XX Handheld "Leaks"
A new ANBERNIC retro handheld has been teased called the RG40XX, a 4" screened device featuring Linux as an OS and more.
The popular retro handheld manufacturer ANBERNIC is once again in the spotlight with a leaked video showcasing their upcoming device, the RG40XX. This 4:3 ratio handheld is a blend of features from both the RG Cube and the RG556 models, incorporating LED joysticks which have become a favorite among gamers.
Key features highlighted in the leak include:
- Retained DPAD: Unlike the recent RG35XXSP clamshell device, this model retains the much-loved directional pad.
- High gloss buttons & small bezels: These design elements are reminiscent of classic gaming aesthetics.
- Headphone jack at bottom: A convenient feature for users who enjoy gaming with headphones.
- Colour options: The handheld will be available in black, blue, and grey.
Speculations suggest the device runs on the Allwinner H700 chipset, equipped with a Linux OS. While this brings limitations such as ANBERNIC’s less-than-desirable front-end interface, users can easily customize it to their liking. With a 4" screen sporting a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, it promises optimal performance for retro gaming.
As of now, information regarding pricing, battery life, and release date remains scarce. However, the leaked video indicates that the product is nearing completion. Historically, leaks like these often precede official announcements by a few weeks and pre-order periods about two months later. Expect an unveiling around July.
Considering the leaked specifications and design elements of the ANBERNIC RG40XX handheld, do you think it offers enough value for retro gaming enthusiasts? What features would you like to see improved or added in future models?

"Unfortunately this was scrapped"
On the occasion of Final Fantasy Tactics' 27th anniversary, its director Yasumi Matsuno shared images of an early version of the game that deviates significantly from the final product. Initially aiming for a real-time strategy (RTS) style similar to "Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen," the project was unfortunately scrapped and led to the release of the beloved turn-based tactics game we know today.
Matsuno explains, "This is a sample image from early 1996. We had hoped to continue development with the aim of creating an RTS... unfortunately this was scrapped." The images reveal a different art style compared to the final version.
While the original concept didn't come to fruition, it's fascinating for fans to see what could have been. Final Fantasy Tactics, known today as one of PS1's best games and later remade on PSP as "Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions," continues to captivate players.
Was the decision to pivot from an RTS to a turn-based strategy game advantageous for Final Fantasy Tactics, considering the unique gameplay experience it provided compared to its competitors at the time?
- Finally my old saves are backed up!
Ordered back in Feb and just got delivered!
As soon as I saw the PS1 version release a while back, I was eager to get a PS2 version to backup the single 8MB card I've owned since my first PS2. I got all my games pre-owned back then, so sadly none came with extra memory cards 😭
Initially I ran into some issues copying the save files from my old 8MB to this one (using wLE), ended up turning off the "Game ID" MCP setting so all saves get copied to the same VMC instead of dedicated ones for each game.
Apparently this card works on the PS3 too if you hold the front right button while connecting the USB, looking forward to that since I have some PS1 saves trapped in there...
