- Update to sh.itjust.works announcement regarding the recent spam wave
This is an update to a previous post: https://sh.itjust.works/post/26389783
The spam wave has slowed down significantly, so we have unblocked almost all of the Misskey and Mastodon instances that were being used to relay the spam posts. Six instances are going to stay on our block list for now:
- kitsui.life
- lawsocial.org
- m.corduba.tech
- puls.social
- seda.social
- startrekshitposting.com
It is interesting to note that these six instances are also considered abandoned by IFTAS, and have been added to the IFTAS DNI list. https://mastodon.iftas.org/@sw_isac/113317470469259706
Since we're adjusting our instance blocks, we have taken this opportunity to update the sh.itjust.works Censures list in Fediseer to match our current block list. https://gui.fediseer.com/instances/detail/sh.itjust.works
That is all. Have a good day, everyone!
Edit: transforthe.win is also now on our block list. Spam posts are still coming from that instance.
- sh.itjust.works announcement regarding the recent spam wave
Hello everyone. In the interest of transparency, I want to fill you in on some recent admin activity here at sh.itjust.works.
The post shown in the attached image may look familiar. A large number of Misskey and Mastodon accounts started spamming similar posts yesterday. Some have spilled over into Lemmy because the posts mention specific communities by name. The spam wave is ongoing at the time that I am making this post.
sh.itjust.works has temporarily defederated from 34 Misskey and Mastodon instances to slow the flow of posts. However, the accounts are spread across so many instances that a block list can’t stop everything. Fortunately, our automod bot is doing a good job of catching additional posts as they appear. We should be able to refederate with the Misskey and Mastodon instances once the spam wave passes.
If you see a post that slipped by our automod, please report it so we can remove it.
If you are curious about the extent that this spam wave is affecting Lemmy, look at the modlog for the lemmy.world AutoMod bot. That instance is relying more on their automod to mitigate this spam wave than we are, and you can clearly see how much work their bot has been doing. As I type this post it has banned+removed well over 200 Misskey and Mastodon spam accounts in the past day. https://lemmy.world/modlog?page=1&actionType=ModBan&modId=2349429
I want to end with a shout out to all the users who identified and reported these posts, and all the proactive admins on other Lemmy instances who were quick to jump on this problem. Thank you, everyone, for making Lemmy better for the whole community!
That is all for now. Have a great day!
- Since the upgrade, has anyone else been unable to change post/comment/modlog sorting options?
Edit: this issue also exists on other instances on 0.19.5, or newer, on my browser
- Anyone else having trouble with links not showing as read?
I've been using Sync for Lemmy for a year or so, but very recently (within the last day or so) links have stopped showing as read when I click on them and then go back. I tested this with a lemmy.world account and don't have the same problem.
I saw a post saying sh.itjust.works was updating to Lemmy v19.5 a few days ago. I'm wondering if maybe it caused a problem or if it's just me having this issue.
Thanks
- SJW upgrade to v19.5
Hello sh.itjust.works community,
It’s been a while since my last update, and I owe you all a more detailed one soon. However, today I’m here to give you a heads-up about the upcoming upgrade.
Over the next 7 days, I’ll be upgrading the instance to v19.5. While this update doesn’t strictly require it, I’ve decided to take this opportunity to upgrade our Postgres database from version 15 to 16 as well. This process can be time-consuming and have take up to 2 hours to complete on other instance.
I'm optimistic that we'll complete it in less time, but to err on the side of caution, I've scheduled the maintenance window for 120 minutes.
To minimize downtime, I've split the upgrade into two phases: Phase one will cover the database update, and Phase two will handle the Lemmy code upgrade.
Note: If the database upgrade is completed in under 60 minutes, I’ll proceed with the Lemmy code upgrade during the same maintenance window.
Here's the tentative timeline:
| Task | Date | Expected Downtime | | ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ | ----------------- | | Upgrade of Postgres Database | Friday September 20 2024 @ 8:00PM ET | 60-120 Minutes | | Upgrade to V19.5 |
Monday or Tuesday September 23 or 24 @ 8:00PM ET|Up to 30 Minutes|During these two planned events those who want to provide moral support or who want to get periodic updates are more than welcome to join us on our matrix channel
edit: 9:23EDT - Hey all, the database and lemmy codebase has been upgraded to v19.5. The database upgrade took a lot less time than expected so I went right into upgrading the codebase. A whole bunch of background tasks are still running which might make your experience slower than usual. Things should be back to normal in the next couple of hours.
- Where can I report mod abuse?
I'd like to report mod activity that's not following sitewide rules on your server and instead bans people because they feel it's not worth their time. I would like for the mod to be overlooked.
The sitewide rule #1 says I can expect to participate without harassment and feel welcome. If I call a mod to look over a user breaking this rule, I should expect them to intervene, right?
So I don't understand why @Apytele@sh.itjust.works is deleting all my comments and banning me instead of the person being aggressive towards me because "both sides of the argument are nonsense" without even bothering with the actual concern. I didn't call them over to look at anyone's argument, I specifically stated in my report that the other person was being extremely disrespectful.
So now I'm banned:
Banned Lemminary from the community Curated Tumblr@sh.itjust.works reason: troll expires: in 30 days
Their excuse? I'm a troll, apparently. I invite anyone to check the messages to see if that's true or if I'm merely sharing my opinion.
I don't care about the ban--keep it that way. But please let me know if something is being done about these mods who enjoy pushing people around. It's infuriating that on top of being dog-piled on, berated & insulted in the thread all day (I got links), I also get treated this way by the people who have taken on the role of protecting users. If I hit the report button, I entrust the person in charge to keep a level head and do their job fairly.
Thank you for your time.
- Why is quakers.social defederated?
quakers.social shows up on our list of blocked instances, but looking at the most recent posts at https://quakers.social/public/local I can't see why. They seem like a harmless group with a lot of religious reposts. Does sh.itjust.works have a policy of reciprocal blocking or something like that?
- Implement automatic image compression on sh.itjust.works?
I have several photos which I can't seem to post. After poking around a bit, I found out that this server has an upload size limit of 5 MB.
Now, an upload size is perfectly reasonable. Storage is expensive, and Lemmy is primarily designed for link aggregation and discussion, not file hosting.
However, the way the system currently fails when it encounters a large file is not ideal, and varies depending on the app/UI.
At best, you get a cryptic error message like
{"data":{"msg":"Exceeded maximum dimensions","files":null},"state":"success"}
, and at worst, your webpage/app stalls for an indefinite amount of time.Obviously, it would be prudent for the Lemmy devs to improve the comprehensibility of the error messages, but if there were a way to automatically compress large images to below the size limit, that would eliminate the error messages in the first place.
I believe this instance uses Pict-rs to host images, is that correct?
I came across these discussion threads in the Lemmy and Pict-rs source code:
- Allow resize to be set in config to reduce max image size, pictrs does support this #2416
- Support pre-processing uploaded media #3
- support resizing to a maximum area #6
Would it be feasible to implement automatic image compression on this server? If it has already been implemented in pict-rs, might it just be a matter of passing an additional argument to pict-rs?
This feature would make things smoother for users, especially for new users who might not be aware of the upload size limit and just think "Lemmy doesn't work, I guess I'll go back to Reddit".
- Idea for the future Olympics Games
The Olympics have always done a great job at gathering the best athletes around the world to compete for gold. It's easy to not fully grasp just how great these athletes are which is why I'd love to see them throw in the average person into every competition (with the exception to those that can get people seriously hurt) and have those people compete with the worlds best.
This person would need to accept beforehand that there would be no chance for them but instead help showcase the difference. Hell, they could even be given participation medals.
Thoughts?
- Can someone explain why so many people here are FOR blocking Threads.net on a server level?
I might not be understanding something about the fediverse, but isn't this like if you couldn't send or receive email from a friend because you use gmail Google decided to block @icloud domains?
Like, you're not forced to follow or interact with it, and are free to block it if you can think of a reason to, I just don't see why such an open platform used to limit users in this way
- Please unban @i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but my main account @i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk appears to have been banned. Can it be unbanned please? Or at least an explanation of why it is? Thanks
- Upgrade to 0.19.5?
Hello everyone,
I know it's summer and people are probably on annual leave, but do you have any idea on when you guys are going to update to the 0.19.5 version?

It's stressing me out to leave communities that are relevant to it unblocked. The sheer cynicism is affecting my mood and I'm having to block all communities about real life news of any kind for personal health, so I am wondering if anyone considers "A Boring Dystopia, but instead of being boring, it's edgy or (at best) a cool workaround for corporate internet BS." a deserving project to continue? - Protocol for purging inactive moderators?
A few sublemmys I moderate have accumulated some inactive moderators.
They weren't bad mods, and I'd happily welcome them back if they become active again, but several accounts have had zero activity for several months. This gives the impression that the sub is better staffed than it is, and I wouldn't want users reporting a problem to a dormant account.
Should inactive moderators be removed? If so, is there a standard etiquette of messaging them every x days for y weeks before removing them?
Some moderators have lower seniority than my account, but a few have higher seniority, often the original creator of a sublemmy during the Reddit blackout last June. How should these cases be handled?
- is there a list of instances that sh.itjust.works defederated from?

- Anyone else notice a long delay for comments/posts from lemmy.world?
It might not just be lemmy.world, but several times recently I've made posts (usually to !helldivers2.lemmy.ca) that I check throughout the day. Then like 8 hours after I've made the post, I'll see comments appear from people on lemmy.world that are several hours old.
It seems like there can be a queue that gets build up and then is suddenly flushed.
I see it happening the other way as well. This morning I made a post from my sh.itjust.works account and then switched over to a lemmy.world account and can't see it. So the delay is going both ways.
- Can't upvote or downvote, neither local server or fediverse
I'm not sure if !Main is the correct place, but I couldn't find any support or question community for sh.itjust.works. Something that could be created and linked in the FAQ?
Well back to the issue: I can't upvote or downvote any posts. Not even my own I think, as I tried to downvote a created post on !test. This is both in a web browser and through the Voyager app. In the app I get a message: Problem voting. Please try again.
Anyone who has any ideas what is causing this?
- Language tag on communities with "default language"
Hi All,
On some francophone communities, ou friend @Camus@lemmy.blahaj.zone has run a couple of tests to understand how does language tag work in community with a default language. See that thread (En Français) for details.
The interesting part is that the behaviour changes based on which instance you post from (I believe all the tests have been done /c hosted by jlai.lu ) To summarize if the community default language is french a post from Lemmy.ca or Blahaj would be automatically tagged as in french while a post from SJW and lemmy.ml won't get automatically a language tag.
I haven't run all the test by myself and just agreed to be the messenger as someone using SJW. No idea whether it's just about setting a flag user-side, or whether it's a very specific lemmy version which enable this discussion.
A short note on language tags too. Not only, they avoid to deal with that frustrated person downvoting content they don't understand. But I've read a nice Mastodon thread about how they matter for visually impaired user who need their screen-reader to know which language they read. So they're very relevant.
Finally, while I'm complaining to our beloved great admins. I've seen that I tried to write that post in French first, but was blocked due to language setting, c'est dommage pour une instance bilingue
- Mlmym instance?
Hey folks,
Is it possible to have a mlmym endpoint for sh.itjust.works? Maybe old.sh.itjust.works?

lemmy.world has one: https://old.lemmy.world/
If not: no big deal. if so: would be cool.
- [SOLVED] I can't post images anymore
This may be linked to the recent update since I posted something two days ago without problem, and I saw to other users commenting about the same problem on the upgrade post. It is not an app specific problem: Eternity just says "Error: 400" when trying to post something with an image, but if I use a browser (tried with both Mull on Android and Firefox on Debian), I get the following error:
{"data":{"error":"unknown","message":"Request error: error sending request for url (http://pictrs:8080/image): error trying to connect: tcp connect error: Connection refused (os error 111)"},"state":"success"}
I hope this is the correct place to post about it, sorry if not. Have a good day!

- Update on SJW upgrade to v19.3
Hello sh.itjust.works community,
Many of you have been eager to get an update about when the sh.itjust.works instance will get it's upgrade to the latest version of lemmy. Here's a update along with a tentative timeline.
In December 2023 I purchased a new server for this community. It took me awhile but I eventually made the time to get it racked at the local datacenter. For the sysadmins lingering and those interested here are the specs:
- Dual Xeon 2.9Ghz CPUs (32 cores total)
- 256GB ram
- 4 x 1TB SSD in raid 10 (with room to add 6 more disks)
- 10gbit networking
While I'm ready to proceed with the upgrade, I've decided to first migrate this instance over to the new hardware. Here are two reasons.
- Those of you who have been around long enough may remember that I've been running this instance on "borrowed" unused resources that were available at the time. There are no more resources available for this instance to grow.
- There are reports that the latest version of lemmy may use more resources. Given we are among the bigger instances, should I end up in a situation where I need to increase resources to keep things fast I'll be restricted.
Here's the tentative timeline:
|Task |Date| Expected Downtime| |-----|------|----------------------| |Migration to new server| Tuesday February 27 2024 @ 8:00PM ET| 90 Minutes | |Upgrade to V19.3| Thursday February 29 2024 @ 8:00PM ET| Up to 120 Minutes |
- If anything major goes wrong on the 27th I will revert back the changes and bring the instance back up on the current server.
- If anything major goes wrong on the 29th I will revert back using an earlier snapshot. If that fails, I will restore from a backup.
During these two planned events those who want to provide moral support or who want to get periodic updates are more than welcome to join us on our matrix channel
========================================================= Update February 29 2024 We've successfully completed the upgrade to v1.9.3. I'm happy to announce that we did it in an astonishing 27 minutes, a whole 93 minutes under what was expected. The extra leg work that was done over the last few weeks combined with the better hardware definitely played a part. Looking over the processes, it looks like the service responsible for images is still doing some work so it's possible that you will come across some broken images. I'll be keeping on eye on that over the next bit and make adjustments if needed. Thank you all for the support and to all of you who kept me company on our matrix channel. Have a good evening.
========================================================= Update February 27 2024 We've successfully completed the migration. I'm happy to announce that this instance is now running on its new hardware dedicated solely to this community! We experienced just under 40 minutes of downtime which is a whole 50 minutes less than expected. Please give this instance a chance to catch up what it missed but we should be good within the next 30 or so minutes. Thank you
- Revised timeline for upgrade to 0.19.x?
Just wondering if we have a revised timeline is for upgrade to 0.19.x.
A couple weeks ago, the target date was "end of the week".
This past weekend, it seems like the target date is "soon".
Is there anything more specific which could be shared at this time, or perhaps a list of outstanding tasks which need to be completed before the upgrade?
As always, big thanks to the admins for keeping this instance running! Thanks for giving me a home on the Fediverse these past few months :)
