Summer sucks.
  • Spring was cancelled this year in my part of the world. Sucks because I enjoy that time too, 75 is where it's at.. instead we snapped from blizzards almost immediately into high 80 degrees

  • Thailand's economy: factory closures due to cheap Chinese imports with job losses jumping by 80% within one year
  • #1 Chips act was entirely a direct result of China's behavior. GM and Exxon are all determined critical to maintaining national security, so of course the government will intervene with these industries, but even independent companies as tightly intertwined with the US Govt as Lockheed are not guaranteed the funding - as you said it is outsourced through bidding to the firm the government deems best equipped for whatever challenge is presented.

You may recall there was great backlash to the GM bailout. Even though the bailout was an emergency reaction and not proactive competitive support - many Americans were culturally comfortable watching that company wither. If it were BYD in the same scenario China wouldn't have even had a discussion, because the government is directly invested in it's success. Just write the check.

The type of support you're citing rarely extends to non-critical industry in western countries, while China is happy to provide investment to gain a competitive edge at any level. I'm not even arguing this is wrong, I just believe it's largely a cultural distinction.

I'm also not implying that governments the world over don't provide incentives to influence market direction, hell that's a primary role of government, but I do see it as fundamentally different approaches giving a tax cut to incentive product development vs SASAC directly sitting on many Chinese boards.

  • Thailand's economy: factory closures due to cheap Chinese imports with job losses jumping by 80% within one year
  • I believe it comes down to a difference in philosophy, the Chinese government is comfortable choosing "winning" companies and funding them, scaling them immediately to compete on the global market. It's part of their "Industrial Policy" approach. Western countries (including countries under their influence) widely refuse to support individual companies (with some exceptions) and let the market decide as they say. Both approaches come with their own inefficiency and risk.

And yes the long term vision is to break the markets. Subsidize and come in cheap, get everyone used to the new floor prices, outlast the competition, and raise the floor once they control it.

Edit - when Romney called China the US #1 geopolitical trade adversary, this is the kind of behavior he was talking about.

  • Wolff addresses Alpine F1 engine rumour
  • I don't think it looks any weirder than McLaren or Aston Martin running Mercedes engines honestly. The Renault engine is shit and it's taken this long for the team to consider alternatives.

  • 9 year hardware upgrade, running arch 😱
  • No worries, it's all good! It's basically two identical drives. The backup drive doesn't get much use outside of the rsync process, but if the main drive fails, I am able to jump onto to the backup drive without much interruption. Before rsync runs it does a comparison and only moves modified files, so it's not a bulk rewrite every week- just brings the target up to parity with the source. If both of these drives kick the bucket at the same time I guess that will just have to accept it as very bad luck lol, only so much I can do. But the plan is when the main drive fails, backup will get promoted to main until I'm able to backfill another drive.

  • Opions on buying a used Flip 3 5g?
  • My flip3 screen had splintering along its hinge in about 8 months, and took Samsung another 3 months to get parts to fix it. 6 months after they fixed, it started showing signs of happening again and I traded it in.

For what is worth I wouldn't do it again.

Edit - also the battery is trash. I was lucky to make it to 8pm some days.

  • Planet Coaster 2 : Announcement Trailer
  • Ehhh. the game is coming up on 8 years, it's definitely time for engine upgrades. Also the majority of DLC is themed packs (ghostbusters, back to the future and the like) with scenery, a single ride, and a single coaster. I wouldn't consider it half-finished.

  • Planet Coaster 2 : Announcement Trailer
  • Planet coaster is definitely the best for sandbox and customizing things. If you want to build a beautiful park and themed rides there's nothing like it. Meanwhile Parkitect scratches the management/business side itch, I just need these devs to get together and combine their strengths haha.

I didn't play any planet zoo, that's promising to hear maybe we'll get some improvements with this too.

  • My ISS is crumbling, is this common?

I have a problem with my International Space Station 21321 set, all the blue clips that hold the panels to the main beams are crumbling, and weakened enough that I wake up to panels on the floor. I have no idea why this is happening, but hoping someone can help? Ideas I can do different to prevent it after I replace these parts? It seems to effect all the blue clips not just the big ones, even the little pod lost one of its solar panels :(

Some details, it's probably 4 years old now. I keep it on display but not under glass, in a 72f room. I have difficulty keeping it totally dust free as it's very fragile to begin with, but it's never really been touched otherwise.

    Thanks for any ideas

Edit: not the technic connectors, the blue solar panel pattern tiles are the problem

9 year hardware upgrade, running arch 😱

I undertook a sizeable upgrade today, bringing a skylake era build into the 2020s with a 13th gen. All core components- memory, motherboard, GPU, everything must go... except the drives. We were nervous, my friend really felt we should reinstall. There was debate, and drama. Considerations and exceptions. No, I couldn't let my OS go. I have spent years tweaking and tuning, molding my ideal computing environment. We pushed forward.

Well I'm pleased to say it was mostly uneventful. The ethernet adapter was renamed causing misconfigured dhcp, but otherwise it booted right up like nothing happened. Sorry, linux is boring now.
