- Irregularly Updated Community Feedback: PipedLinkBot Gone Rampant Edition
Previously: Submission Statement Edition
Haven't done these in a while, so let's get started.
- Since we haven't really heard any feedback one way or the other, rule 8 is now official. To be fair, we've had a lot less microblog posts than I expected (only one Twitter/X post in the last month even after I waited longer than the initial 1-2 weeks expected, and that was a crosspost.)
- Again, the rules are always a work in progress, feel free to give your two cents here whenever you like.
- As you guys know, PipedLinkBot went completely insane 2 days ago and looks like it's temporarily shut down. So, I'd like to use this opportunity to explain why I banned the bot pretty much immediately after our community reopened. (And gloat a bit, of course)
-
Even though I do agree with the principle of using open source, privacy focused frontend instead of using Youtube directly, I have a real problem with using a bot to respond every time somebody posts a Youtube link. It feels like spam, and it doesn't feel like it serves any utility besides pushing an agenda (even though many people here would agree with it). Most people have seen it around here enough to use pipedvideo if they wanted it to use it already.
-
I think it's always been a rage inducing part of the reddit experience that you see you received a response to your comment, but only have it been a bot smugly correcting your grammar or tell you all your letters are in order or something useless like that. So, for this place, I would like to make sure that everyone you talk to here is a real person as much as possible, because people inspire people to be greater, but bots don't.

- Good foss app to run a simple http server from a directory?
i found one on fdroid but it was old and the directory selector was broken and couldn't really work outside of it's default for some reason, it also rendered the page i'm trying to use really weirdly, like it wasn't sending some file over and the css got borked.
Found one that wasn't foss, installed it, opened it, "buy premium to unlock this feature", uninstalled it.

My phone is losing regularly GSM network during calls and people are saying that they cannot hear me. Is there any fix of this? I have already tried to disable WiFi Calling, 5G, restart the phone, etc. but those problems persist. I wasn't able to find reliable information on the internet that could help. If someone is experiencing similar issues and found a fix, let me know.
Alternatively, I can also install some other ROM, but I want to keep this as a last option. In this case feel free to recommend any good and stable ROMs.

- [SOLVED] Accidently damaged an MicroSD by pulling it before it had fully ejected
I accidentally removed a MicroSD card from an Android device running Android 12 while it was being ejected. This happened because it took longer than usual (less than a few seconds), and I pulled it out without looking at the notification. Now, when I insert the MicroSD card into any Android device, it tells me to format it to use it, as a problem has occurred. It also gives me the option to format it and extend the internal storage. The third option is to skip both and do it later, which keeps the SD card unreadable by the system. The MicroSD card contains a lot of data that's important to me, and unfortunately, I had no backup, as I always considered my MicroSD as an external storage medium for such data. I would really appreciate any help on how I can resolve this issue and make the SD card data accessible again by Android. Thank you for reading! 🥲Edit: Don't ask me why or how. But I put the SD Card into a phone running Android 14, and booted it. The SD Card could be actually read by the phone after it finished booting. I turned the phone off again, pulled the SD card out and put it back into it's original running Android 12 and magically it works again! My theory is that the Android 14 recognized and automatically fixed what was wrong and this made the card readable again to older Android versions.
Thanks to everyone who commented!

- Any way to get notifications sooner?
With every version of Android it seems to be harder and harder to get real time notifications anywhere near real time.
Twitch notifications, Signal, WhatsApp, I often get these ten to thirty minutes too late.
I've excluded them from battery optimisation but that doesn't seem to do anything. And I can't find anything else.
I don't care about battery usage. I'm always near a charger.

- This new Find My Device Network....
What percentage of Android phones are actually running it? I get that it's brand new and over time more and more phones will report the location of trackers, but are there any metrics on current "market saturation" (for lack of a better word)?
I just got my Pebblebee clips yesterday that I pre-ordered a few months ago. I wanted to test them out so I sent one in my kid's backpack to daycare today (which is a legit use case I had in mind when buying these, particularly when we leave him with a babysitter).
When I try to check on the location, it says "last seen at 7:45" which is when I dropped him off, implying that my phone was the last to ping the tracker. So that means none of the teachers' phones, nor any of the other parents' phones have pinged the tracker. It's not a big daycare but he's one of the first to arrive. There should have been at least 2 dozen other phones near his backpack since then. This brings me back to my question about how many phones would you expect to report the location of a tracker.

I have an ancient Pixel 3 that still works. I'd like to install a new, third-party OS. Which would you recommend?
I can see that there are many: Lineage, Calyx, /e/, Graphene, .... How do I make the decision? Can all of them work on a phone as old as my Pixel 3?
Edit: holy shit, I just installed Lineage OS on my lunch break! I've installed "alternative" OSes before on computers but never on a phone. I just followed the instructions (which were a little confusing as there were nested steps) and it's up and running!
- CCWGTV never goes to idle
Hey guys. Is there any Android TV app that can trigger auto turn off after set amount of time of not using CC remote control?
We have a projector connected to ChromeCast with Google TV 4k and also a bluetooth speaker connected to CC. Sometimes we fall asleep while watching a movie/show at night and it is just wasting projector lamp hours. What I want is actually a basic TV feature that pops a message on the screen "shutting down in xxx seconds" and gets canceled with any button on CC remote control.
Projector actually has that feature, but then I have to use projectors remote control (trying to get rid of it with smart IR blaster and Home Assistant) to cancel the shutdown and even if it goes off CC is still playing sound from BT speaker. Projector has HDMI CEC settings, but it is not working at all unfortunately.
CC has a feature "Automatically turn off when inactive", but it never gets to inactive state because Jellyfin will just play a next episode (can be disabled, but would like to keep it) or TiVi mate is just playing until closed manually.
All opinions are welcome, thanks

Imagine it, not a repo, but a site or app that lets you "try out" custom roms through an embedded or emulated interface.
It's such a hassle downloading and installing every rom out there to see how they feel and function, it would be nice to be able to take them out for test drives. I think this could be theoretically possible, several bluestack emulators for the most popular custom roms emulated as an instance of mostly just the lock and home screen with a few dummy apps, kind of like how things are set up in a phone shop.
Unfortunately I'm not quite skilled enough to set something like this up, and I'm sure the server hosting would be a bit of a financial burden but I think this is a cool, albeit, unlikely idea.

- Trouble with root
I use LOS with microg on my OnePlus 8T. I have been running rooted with Kitsune (magisk fork), and I always follow the process to maintain root when upgrading LOS. Today I updated but somehow lost root. So I went through the process of rooting again: downloaded the boot.IMG, patched it on device, moved it to PC, booted into fastboot, flashed patched.IMG to current slot. Kitsune still says N/A. Anyone else having similar trouble? Or maybe just care to point out something obvious I'm missing?
- Question on installing an alternative OS and cell service providers.
I am thinking of trying a new OS on my Pixel 8 pro, and I’m wondering if switching will require me to inform or update my cell service provider, Verizon, in any way to stay connected. When I just moved my SIM card from one device to another, I learned that it activates an anti theft feature after a couple of days of working normally. This was easily fixed with Verizon support, but it was a hassle since I’m still on my parents’ phone plan. Am I likely to have this or a similar issue after installing a new OS, or should my cell service and data continue to work?

Apple has announced that its Messages app will support the RCS messaging standard in iOS 18. RCS offers more advanced features compared to traditional SMS, including higher-quality media, typing indicators, and end-to-end encryption. This move will improve messaging between iOS and Android devices, which currently rely on the less capable SMS protocol. Apple's decision to add RCS support likely comes in response to pressure from Google, Samsung, and European regulators who have pushed for better cross-platform messaging. Overall, this change will bring the iPhone's messaging capabilities more in line with the Android experience.

- Open source ebook reader recommendations?
Currently I'm using Google Play books and there are few things I'm used to and can't live without:
- turning pages by volume keys
- cloud syncing (doesn't have to be their cloud, but implementing some cloud services would be nice, bonus points for S3 compatible)
- searching text in the book
- supports epub
I want to switch to something open source because I'm often using my S-Pen to turn pages and I'd like my book reader to support it too. I'm fine with contributing the code myself (as I've done for the comic book reader app I'm using), but if there already is one, it would save me some work.
