My friend is in-denial about being transgender, what can I do to help break her egg
  • Have you considered he might just have a non-standard gender expression? It doesn't say anything about his gender identity. And even if he someday determines he's not a boy, he might be non binary or agender or genderfluid or any number of other things.

Just apologize for pressuring him, let him figure himself out in his own time.

  • To go with the other post, what items do you get where you look for the generic brands?
  • Pretty much everything I consume. The main exceptions are canned tomatoes (the store brands are always sourer than I'd like), some cheeses. I used to also buy brand pasta, but ever since my supermarket got its own generic bronze-cut pasta I no longer need to.

When it comes to medicinal products I'm more likely to get a brand version though, e.g when the brand version works better, like with Tiger Balm, or when a generic isn't available.

  • Tidal's pretty good, they cost the same as spotify but all accounts have access to lossless. The playlists it makes for me are no worse than spotify's and I can sleep happy knowing the artists I listen to get compensated better than on either Spotify or Apple Music.

I also feel the app's design helps me see music in the context of the album it was released in instead of as random tracks, which has made me reconnect with some kinds of music I'd grown apart from after I got Spotify.

  • Italy begins stripping lesbian mothers of their parental rights
  • You're right, I'll be removing the meme. It was in poor taste.

I chose to post it because of my personal frustration with the turn politics are taking both in my southern European country and in Europe overall.

I come from Greece and in our last elections we had a historically low voter turnout, with mostly conservative and far-right voters showing up. Which lead to a very fascist parliament. And then everyone was surprised with the results, which made me feel "well what were we all expecting when we didn't even show up to vote?".

But I don't really know how the elections went in Italy, so my comment was indeed misplaced.

  • Italy begins stripping lesbian mothers of their parental rights
  • Putting aside the bitter feelings this makes me feel, this is horrible news. From my experience in my own country, voting as a minority & leftist person feels like fighting the waves these last years... I just keep thinking about when things will take a similar turn to Italy's in other countries too, because it seems like only a matter of time.

  • Tumblr is losing $30M each year, CEO says
  • I was wondering the exact same thing a few days ago and spent some amount of time googling it.

There's already such a project actually, called Swanye. There seems to be a single person working on it, so if anyone has time to help I'm sure it will be appreciated

  • During travel, what can I prepare beforehand as meal, which can be eaten without access to fire or microwave?
  • One of my favorite snacks to eat on daytrips are hardboiled eggs. You could bring chili/spice mix packets with you to add flavor on the road (I like buying some labeled as "hot pot mate" from my local chinese market). Not much of a meal by themselves of course, but can be a very filling supplement to something like a sandwich or a salad. Good as in between snacks too.

  • Analysis | Printer ink is a scam. Here’s how to spend less.
  • No, you're right! But it's only possible for epub/mobi and txt files.

Pdfs can be zoomed into, but then you need to scroll around the page and it starts feeling rather like you're looking at the paper through a keyhole. I tried converting pdf to epub, but the formatting/page layout of the original matters and it doesn't translate well.

  • Student here, journal articles are a lot easier to read on paper than on screen. After the first hour or so of screen reading my eyes get drier than the Sahara and I feel dizzy. I tried reading on my e-reader, but journals like to cram as much text on a page as possible, which doesn't work well on a 6" reader.

  • Greece’s Prime Minister vows to legalise same-sex marriage
  • Seeing as we just voted in three fascist parties to our parliament, I highly doubt legalisation will happen any time soon. And even if it does, I am sad to say its only purpose will be to throw ash in our eyes so we ignore the much deeper systemic issues in the country, which leave the population starving despite record profits from tourism. Hard to feel any joy about news like this, even though it'd mean I could get married to my partner in our motherland instead of another country.
