'Glorifying Terrorism' Charges - France Sentences Pro-Palestine Activist to Three Years
  • Likely that there’s more to this, but I think it’s also important to remember that they did the same to some climate activists and that institutions in France are notoriously hostile towards the French-Muslim population, especially of (North-)African descent.

There are way too many people alive who still remember France having colonies. Levantine Arabs have a better standing due to some Palestinians and Lebanese churches having close ties to France, but in general I also wouldn’t rule out that this sentence is as harsh just because someone disliked by the government was too critical of said government. Although I have to admit that this is now speculation from my side

  • Stabbings, car ramming as Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer fans violently attacked in Amsterdam after match
  • Absolutely this. I saw the videos first and read newspaper articles later. Nowhere in the articles did they mention the chants and the ripping off of flags, I saw both in those videos. It’s crazy how even violent hooligans are now portrayed as victims just because it fits the narrative.

  • Damn. 😔
  • Also iirc lemmy.ml doesn’t require an email address which is another plus. My account was also with ml initially. The only disadvantage of lemmy.ml is that if you go to all or local you’ll see all of that tankie BS.

  • French pupil’s father on trial for spreading lies that led to teacher’s Islamist beheading
  • And I think it’s totally fine to criticize religion, especially organized religion that instrumentalizes people for their own political gain. For the sake of free speech that has to be possible.

But this specific mockery imo comes from a very particular crowd that comments this under every article that is about a Muslim read person committing a crime. And then if you base your observation on news articles there’s unfortunately a long history of institutional racism that creates a bias in our perception through overreporting in the media and overemphasis in law enforcement.

Maybe to bring across my point, if a Zionist settler/soldier does some terroristic/genocidal, we also don’t establish a connection between their actions and Judaism as a whole, because we would be rightfully accused of antisemitism. In the same way, the actions of a few extremist individuals shouldn’t hold hostage the other 99.9% of the 1.5bn Muslims who live peacefully. I think I wouldn’t care too much and would agree that it’s just mockery if this wouldn’t be so common to read on right wing platforms. I don’t want to let any malicious actors shift the Overton window in here to where it is in most other social media.

  • lemmy rn
  • Not in the US but in another place where fascism is on the rise. The sad reality is that leftists all around the world might have to start thinking about self-defence. Go to the gym, practice martial arts. Since you’re in the US, arm yourself, learn how to shoot.

It sounds crazy but I’m not kidding, we still have time until the SA/SS Type of people actually have the power to roam the streets and establish a full blown dictatorship. Before that happens we have to learn to fight back.

In parallel, get organized. Join grassroots organizations. Try to spread the word. Talk to the people you know and tell them what you’re doing and why. It feels like we can’t do anything but we have to start somewhere.

And finally, think about an exit strategy. Once it's 1933 and the dictatorship is established and political enemies go to the concentration camps, it’s too late and you better be somewhere abroad already.

I know all of this sounds extreme, and I’m hoping for a much more boring dystopia, but this is what would prepare you for the truly Orwellian dystopia and what may help prevent it from happening.

  • Why would I be nice to bigots? That’s what got us in the whole mess that is another Trump presidency and Europe sliding into fascism in the first place. If you want to have a taste of what tolerating this ”I‘m just pointing out facts“ leads to go back to any random politics subreddit and see what has happened there. I don’t need this in here. I’m tired of it. I‘m not special, I’m like 99% of people out there, I’m nice if you are. Being a bigot isn’t being nice.

  • Google Authenticator collects much more data than the other authenticator apps PCMag reviewed
  • Yeah what can be done is create a clean Google account registered through an anonymous phone number and a throwaway user name & password, and best to secure it with a hardware key just to make sure no one can get into your OTPs by somehow getting access to those credentials. That should allow you to save credentials in an account at least if you make sure to not login to it on the same device as your other accounts.

But also not blaming anyone for not trusting Google in the first place.

  • Google Authenticator collects much more data than the other authenticator apps PCMag reviewed
  • I read their article but didn’t understand their methodology. This is pretty much in contrast to this video where a bunch of apps got audited and to everyone’s surprise Google Authenticator seemed like one of the most private alternatives.

Really not trying to defend Google here because… they’re fucking Google, but I’m wondering why the results are so different.

  • Oh Shit

The worst part? It seems to be true
