It’s not related to Windows or Linux, but as the article notes, Apple devices that use UEFI are not vulnerable (and current ones don’t use it anymore and therefore aren’t vulnerable either), so I guess that’s where the “Windows or Linux” comes from.

Ich weiss nicht ob man an diesen absoluten Zahlen so gut eine gesellschaftliche Veränderung ablesen kann. Bei Energie ist das halt oft hauptsächlich China. Bei Solar ist ungefähr die Hälfte China. Bei Wind noch mehr. Aber bei fossilen Brennstoffen halt auch.

BaWü hat von allen Bundesländern am wenigsten Wind. Das war jedenfalls immer das Argument der FDP und der AfD gegen den Ausbau. Seit der Energiekrise haben sich die Meinungen insgesamt etwas verschoben. Wenig Wind hieß auch, dass es schwer war Fördergelder vom Bund zu bekommen. Auch das ist seit der Energiekrise besser. Dementsprechend sind auch wieder mehr Anlagen in Planung bzw. schon genehmigt nachdem der Ausbau für ein paar Jahre mehr oder weniger gar nicht stattgefunden hat. Von den Grünen hätte ich da trotzdem mehr Ergebnisse erwartet. Es ist nicht so dass sie sich nicht dafür eingesetzt hätten, Gesetze wurden auch angepasst um es einfacher zu machen bzw. sogar zu erzwingen. Aber die Resultate sind halt noch nicht so wirklich in dem Umfang da den man bei einem grün regierten Bundesland erwarten würde.

Lightning has two data lanes and this cable looks like it’s missing one of them. IIRC devices can use either lane depending on orientation of the plug so that would explain why data transfer was working for you. Does it stop working if you rotate the plug?

Pretty much everybody in this thread who is laughing at Amazon’s drones is thinking of drones as they are right now. But Amazon is not using drones because it’s a good idea now. They’re using drones now so they already have the experience and the setup when inevitable technical progress happens.

The drones might never work out or they might eventually work out, but this is exactly how Amazon got so big in the first place. They started selling books online when a lot of people still weren’t sure whether that could work and they started selling cloud computing almost ten years before anyone else thought to do that.

Mal nebenbei, wenn ich da (als hellhäutiger Deutscher) den ersten Satz lese: Imagine you apply for jobs and never hear back. Ja, kann ich mir gut vorstellen, war bei mir auch mal so und bei vielen Leuten die ich kenne auch. Ich hab ja keine Zweifel daran dass das Problem real ist, aber muss man den Report mit so einem Musterbeispiel eröffnen für etwas wo jemand mit dunkler Haut sich leicht diskriminiert fühlen kann wenn es ihm passiert, unabhängig davon warum es wirklich passiert?

Ich hätte auch generell gern mehr Infos, was genau als Diskriminierung wahrgenommen wird. Wird z.B. als Diskriminierung gemeldet, wenn jemand selbst oder eine Angehörige bei der Arbeit oder in der Schule keinen Schleier tragen darf? Das ist jetzt ein relativ extremes Beispiel, aber solche Fälle wo kulturelle Unterschiede oder, wie in diesem Fall, Gesetzgebung die eigentlich Menschenrechte schützen soll, als Diskriminierung wahrgenommen werden, gibt es halt auch. Und es ist auch etwas wo sich in vielen europäischen Staaten die Gesetzgebung seit dem Vergleichsjahr 2016 geändert hat.

Also jetzt nicht um die Zahlen zu relativieren. Da sind so oder so genug die ohne Interpretationsspielraum und einfach nur mies sind. Ich erlebe einfach nur oft genug dass es da ziemliche Differenzen gibt was Leute aus verschiedenen Kulturkreisen als Diskriminierung empfinden. Und zwar in beide Richtungen, also z.B. auch dass wir uns wegen irgendeinem dummen Kommentar in TV aufregen während die Zielgruppe der Diskriminierung das nicht nachvollziehen kann und sich gar nicht diskriminiert fühlt. Diskriminierung kann man nicht gut bekämpfen wenn man nur für sich selbst anhand der eigenen Kultur als Referenzrahmen beschließt, was problematisch ist und was nicht.

Comparing to macOS is actually impossible because fde can’t be turned off on Macs at all. Macs (and iPhones etc.) handle encryption of internal storage transparently in hardware at pretty much no overhead and without the CPU even having access to the key. You can only choose whether a login is required for the Secure Enclave hardware to be able to access the key.

On other platforms it’s pretty much a hardware question too. PC vendors and hard disk vendors could do the same thing Apple is doing regardless of whether the OS is Windows or Linux or whatever. How fast the OS based encryption is only matters on hardware that doesn’t have this functionality.

The T2 chip is only in Intel Macs. ARM Macs have the Secure Enclave too but it’s part of the main SoC, not a dedicated chip.

If it’s a Mac then it’s not the CPU that’s doing the encryption for the internal drive. Macs have separate hardware for that, the CPU can’t even get the key.

Macs have encryption in hardware in the dma channel for their built-in drives (Intel Macs with T2 and all ARM Macs), so the overhead is negligible on the internal ssd. Macs actually don’t even have unencrypted internal drives anymore. The filevault toggle only affects whether the volume encryption key stored in the secure enclave is itself encrypted or not.

Older Macs and external drives are a different story of course.

It's not that it's completely useless, but it's not designed as a learning tool. It's a game designed to keep you engaged. While it's possible to pick up some things from Duolingo, what it actually rewards with streaks and leaderboard positions and so on isn't learning, but just engaging with the app. It's pretty easy to fall into a trap where it keeps telling you that you're doing well, but you're not actually making progress, because demonstrating progress is completely irrelevant for getting rewarded. And on top of that it teaches some things that are just outright wrong, it even gets kanji readings wrong.
