Oculus PC app setup crashes before launching, making installation impossible
  • From the first message it sounds like it tries to load some image before it collapses. Do you have some strange color correction, monitor settings, night light? Multiple or external gpus? Variable or 60+ framerate?

Update your gpu drivers, unplug all monitors except the main one, reset any graphic related windows and driver settings youchanged to default.

  • Life during first half of 2024 (not mine) - Do people here track things in a similar way?
  • I track some of my habits, and I have an illness which symptoms show up between 1 month and a year frequency and I used to forgot when it was the last time. I also track my shaving habits, but it's not as frequent as OP:)

I use Loop Habit Tracker, it's foss and on fdroid:

Some years ago I tracked my weight, but it was too depressing, so I stopped. There is also a good foss app for that, Waistline: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.waist.line/

  • Announcing the Ladybird Browser Initiative
  • He says "powered by or funded by Google". Firefox depends on Google financially, most of the income of Mozilla comes from Google paying for being the default search engine.

They try to diversify their income (Firefox VPN, email alias service, etc.), but anything they try gets a huge backlash from the community, and still small compared to the the money from google.

    Panoramax on Android/iOS
  • This also blurs faces and registration plates, e.g. see this random image

You can already check manually uploaded images on one of the servers:

In the docs they have a nice image showing how components work, the blur API does this work on the server:

    Documentation is here: https://panoramax.gitlab.io/gitlab-profile/

Full source code is on Gitlab: https://gitlab.com/panoramax

It's developed in France, so GDPR applies to everything, EU rules are not a second thought. A main contributor and supporter is IGN (National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information) a French government institution. https://www.ign.fr/institut/identity-card

  • Panoramax on Android/iOS
  • https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Panoramax

    Tldr: Google streetview for OpenStreetMap.

We had similar services before, but Mapillary was bought by Facebook, Kartaview/OpenStreetCam is slow as hell andeven the client's source changed to proprietary at one point. Mapilio is similar but also closed source.

This finally aligns with the goals of the community, not another quick startup, you can install it on your server.

  • bookmark manager like jabref for linux?
  • I use wallabag. There is paid hosted version, but you can install it on your server. You can tag, star and mark read/unread your bookmarks. There is a webapp, browser extensions, mobile apps for all platforms, and apps for ebook readers.

  • Chromium based browser for armeabi-v7a
  • FFUpdater supports Android 5+: https://f-droid.org/packages/de.marmaro.krt.ffupdater/ You can install a lot of browsers from there, maybe one of them supports this phone: https://github.com/Tobi823/ffupdater

Also check slimsocial, it's a facebook client, supports Android 4.4+ and it lists arm7 support: https://f-droid.org/hu/packages/it.rignanese.leo.slimfacebook/

And new Chinese phones (Redmi, HMD, etc) are really cheap, they are good as a backup smartphone. I know it sounds terrible, but you can't really do anything with planned obsolescence. Our time is short on this planet, waiting for websites on old hardware simply doesn't worth it, you should spend this time on more important things.

  • Threads can now show replies from Mastodon and other fediverse apps
  • mastodon.social, the "default" instance federates. If you have an account there you can see zuckerberg's profile with this link: https://mastodon.social/@zuck@threads.net/ without an account this redirects to threads

On other federating instances just search for @zuck@threads.net

  • Meta is connecting Threads more deeply with the fediverse
  • I see, so all instance admins can see that theoretically, but regular users can't. I don't remember where I read what I wrote, can't find it now.

It's a bit misleading that lemmy developers themself call votes "essentially anonymous" like in this issue: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/4088

With this in mind I will go back to upvote memes with my other accounts, and switch between them more regularly.

  • Meta is connecting Threads more deeply with the fediverse
  • Afaik on lemmy only your host instance knows what you upvote/downvote, instances just sync the number of upvotes, not the users who voted. So they cannot analyze that, even if they spin up a their own lemmy instance l was wrong, see reply

Comments are 100% public though, that's true

  • Origin of the third day of the week the different European languages
  • It's a map of countries, not languages... There are a lot more situations in Europe where the boundaries of languages don't align with political borders.

    Some other problems:

    • Kosovo is colored the same way as Serbia, but there are by far more Albanians live there, so it should be the colored that way.
    • What the hell is the color of Switzerland. Is it colored according to the Rhomansh, a language spoken by 40 thousand people, 0.5% of the population?

this is a very shitty map.

    • Be careful, this is a very disturbing movie
    • Make sure you watch the uncut version, some important scenes were cut from the first US release

Default makepkg.conf options changed with pacman 6.0.2-9, so now every package built from AUR also builds and installs its debugging symbols

    MR: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/pacman/-/merge_requests/1

    An issue: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/pacman/pacman/-/issues/91

To find your already installed debug packages: pacman -Q | grep -e '-debug '

This debug packages usually huge, I noticed this accidentally, and I haven't found a news about this on archlinux.org

To solve this add a ! before debug on line 97 in /etc/makepkg.conf
