  • This, Legend, and Labyrinth were a huge part of my childhood, and yet I turned out straight-ish. More or less. I mean, there's always Gene Kelly. And Toshiro Mifune. And Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. A man's got to know the limits of his heterosexuality.

Oh, also, about The Last Unicorn...

Some of the animators from TLU would eventually go on to found Studio Ghibli, and that makes sense.

Also, if you get a chance listen to the Peter David commentary on the movie. He's grumpy and cantankerous throughout, but was apparently very happy about the movie. At one point he says "When I heard they were going to have America do the music, all I knew was 'A Horse with No Name' and I thought it would be terrible, but then I heard what they came up with and it was perfect." It's a great commentary, well worth the listen.

  • How many college educations could have been fully funded for $3 billion? How many elementary schools built? How many other worthwhile problems could have been solved, rather than building a bunch of worthless crumbling garbage out in the desert?

  • You can bite the inside of your mouth in such a manner that it makes you more likely to bite the same spot again.

Your body is constantly afraid that it's going to starve to death at any moment, to the extent that it stockpiles fat to such a degree that you can die of too much fat stockpile. If you start getting exercise and burn some fat, your body will adjust to try and stockpile fat even harder, so you have to increase your exercise load to keep ahead of the system.

Pain has a emotional component. It's not enough that we are aware of damage being done to our body, but rather sometimes that awareness is so strong that it renders us incapable of defending or repairing ourselves. Meanwhile, any number of other animals can full-on get a major limb ripped right off and they just keep on keeping on like it's no big deal.

  • "Mr. Franklin, of what use is this hot air balloon contraption?"

"You can take ladies up in it with a bottle of wine and a blanket and you know, they can’t refuse, because of the implication. Think about it. She's floating up in the middle of the sky with some dude she barely knows. You know, she looks around, and what does she see? Nothing but open air. 'Ahhhh! There’s nowhere for me to run. What am I gonna do, say ‘no?’"

  • Pig is a masterclass in not telling the audience more than they absolutely need to know. I've gotten so sick of movies where the dialog repeats itself for the benefit of people who weren't paying attention thirty seconds ago, or else it constantly spells out stuff that rightly ought to be conveyed by the actions of the characters. Pig is the antithesis of that. Characters hardly say anything that they don't need to say, and everything else is left to the viewer to figure out. I fucking love it.
