To Americans: How far apart is everything in the US?
  • Rural southern Georgia: 300m to the only gas station/convenience store in town. 10km to the nearest real supermarket, medical center, pharmacy, tiny library, dentist, and a couple of restaurants. 30km to the nearest big box store (Walmart). 100km to the nearest small regional airport. 120km to train station.

  • How much do y'all spend on coffee a month?
  • If I am not traveling, just drinking at home or my office then under $25 for single origin Typica or Yellow Bourbon light roast beans.

If I am traveling then I might splash out $100 for four bags of beans.

  • Remember to give yourself some simple pleasures
  • I was using two already older but pretty good and not cheap hand grinders (Knock Feld 2 and Helor 101). But I recently got the Fellow Ode Gen 2 flat burr grinder ($300) for V60 pour overs at home and it was a complete game changer. At the same time, I took the somewhat recently purchased Fellow Opus conical grinder to the office to use with the Clever Dripper and now my coffee both at home and at the office are substantially better than before.

  • What's the most irresponsible purchase you made that you don't regret?
  • Excellent and nice choices! I feel the same way about the Revel F208 speakers I bought a while back. Completely didn't need them since the Revel F36 were already pretty good but oh was the improvement noticeable. I honestly don't think I will replace them as long as the are working properly.

  • Airbnb's struggles go beyond people spending less. It's losing some travelers to hotels.
  • I stopped looking at ABnB a few years ago. It stopped making financial and quality of life sense. The costs became nearly equal or greater than that of hotels I cross shopped.

The hassle though is what really killed it. The inconvenience of dealing with a host that was not on-site and often not available to deal with issues plus the long list of chores required and the potential penalties of not following them perfectly just made it not worth doing.

  • What's a life lesson you learned the hard way that you'd want to share with others to help them avoid the same mistake?
  • Yeah, I can't argue with that. I try to avoid funds that have significant investment in weapons manufacturers. If a person's needs require a minimum level social and/or environmental awareness, there are tools in the Fidelity research system that show that kind of thing. This may be limited to specific stocks and not funds though. I can only speak about Fidelity since that is my only point of experience.
