They look so sleepy
This looks like the RG405M but better?
It has the same guts as the RG35XX Plus, RG35XX H and RG35XX SP, so it's much less powerful
I have the Arc-D and I think it's the same screen. 4 inch really is a sweet spot for handhelds that you maybe don't wanna take on the go.
I looked at the cheaper version of the Arc but the lack of analog sticks and L3/R3 on it made me pass on it, though I believe even the S might be powerful than the XX series.
I really wanna get the RG35XXSP but this looks sweet too.
The SP definitely looks cool but a horizontal form factor with traditional stacked shoulder buttons and triggers is a must for me since the PS1 would be one of my main systems
There is the RG Cube they just put out that seems to be fairly competent at PS2 and GameCube but that again costs a hundred bucks more than these budget devices
That might take a while as all the PS2-capable devices still cost around 150-200 dollars from what I can see (or 200-300 euros in Europe).
Personally I don't mind since all of the sixth gen games I'd like to play are ones I'd prefer on a big screen anyway, though the PS2 and GC definitely have tons of arcadey games that would be fun on the go
I'm really only interested in budget devices. I just can't justify splurging several hundred euros on what is at the end of the day a frivolous gadget when I could put that money towards a new phone or something.
I don't really need a Steam Deck or equivalent either as I already have a desktop PC.
I've just been waiting for a budget device with the right balance of quality and performance to come along

I've been looking at the Chinese Android/Linux emulation handheld scene for a few years now and while I think these things are really neat I've never bought one. They've always either been too expensive or too compromised/crappy with no middle ground.
The RG35XX H from earlier this year was pretty close- it had a horizontal form factor, Bluetooth, Wifi, a full set of buttons and analog sticks, decent build quality and performance that could easily handle everything up to PS1 (and could stretch just a little bit beyond that), and could be bought for less than 70 dollars. I hated that it had those in-line shoulder buttons a lot of these Chinese manufacturers love and I wished the screen had been just a bit bigger.
(To be fair, I wouldn't mind a device that could readily play DC, N64, PSP and even the Saturn, but that sort of performance seems to cost at least 130-150 dollars and would most likely end up costing about 200€ in Europe)
This new RG40XX H looks to be the exact same thing as the 35XX H but with a 4-inch screen and stacked shoulder buttons. If it's not horribly more expensive than the previous model I might finally end up getting one
If you're on PC you can get Dead Space 2 for less than 5 bucks right now from the summer sale. It was more linear and action-y than the original but still within acceptable limits and overall a great experience
Dead Space 2 is currently discounted to 3.99€ which is fair but I distinctly remember gifting it to someone a couple of years back and it costing less than 2 euros in whatever sale that was. Then you have the original 2008 Dead Space at 7.99€, twice as expensive, and they list a 5.99€ EA Play sub above the fucking game itself on the store page
The pessimist in me wants to say we're going to see less and less of deep discounts on old games in the future in favour of this fucking subscription bullshit
>EA kills Dead Space after a turn to co-op action schlock guest-starring microtransactions fails to result in bazillions of sales
>Years later, some former devs announce a spiritual successor. After initial fan hype gets dinged by ongoing negative press for the in-development Callisto Protocol, EA suddenly announces a Dead Space 1 remake, deflating Callisto Protocol's hype even more- who needs a spiritual successor when the original is back?
>Callisto Protocol finally comes out. It runs like shit on PC, the story sucks and people hate the gameplay. It fails to sell enough to justify a sequel
>The Dead Space remake comes out and by all accounts is a success. The disappointment of Callisto Protocol is quickly forgotten and people are excited for the future- DS2 remake next?
>EA decides the remake didn't sell enough and the devs are shuffled off to make more Battlefield or whatever
A year or two ago it seemed like we were in the middle of a huge survival horror resurgence but I'm not sure if any bigger franchise outside of Resident Evil has actually seen any kind of tangible success. The Alone in the Dark remake crashed and burned this year and took down its developer with it. I'm interested to see how the Silent Hill 2 remake does
These people complained about every single face model not being attractive enough in these remakes even though they're all literal models. The whining-industrial complex is utterly divorced from reality

I actually don't care for remake Leon or Wesker too much
To be fair, I don't think this was a hugely prevalent opinion even among brain-melted gamers,

compared to other inane bullshit they complained about like Ashley's underwear
but I did hear it come up a few times when the RE2 and RE4 remakes were topical
I've been watching some recent RE6 playthroughs to gauge how it plays with people who got into the series with the newer games and I've seen an interesting reversal where a number of people are confused by RE6 Ada, thinking she looks too different to be the same character, specifically because they think she looks too white. These same people didn't seem to have trouble accepting Leon and Chris' 2012 models

It's so weird seeing Konami being this public-facing after all the stuff that went down with Kojima and them pulling out of the console game business. They go out of their way to mention that Kojima and the other original devs will still be credited- the fact that this needs to be clarified says a lot about how bad the situation was
I know it's just a cultural thing but there's something kind of funny to me about how rigidly formal all these Konami events are, though I guess do prefer it to the corporate !fellow-kids vibe you get from a lot of American game marketing
They even show and read some pretty negative comments at one point !michael-laugh
What I meant to say was-
I think Capcom has a strict "no real cities" policy for the RE series so Wayip or whatever it's called is probably supposed to be Hong Kong in the RE universe
And when it comes to Eastern Europe, they don't use real countries either. RE6 has "Edonia" and one of the shitty CGI movies had Slavicstan or something
I'll have to get those games from a sale eventually
Oops, I meant to put this comment here
My standards for gamers are so low that upon reading this my overriding thought was "well, at least he wasn't racist or sexist"
I'll have to get those games from a sale eventually

Right-wingers believe that gay and trans people are inherently disgusting and repulsive but also that seeing one or being aware of their existence will instantly turn you gay and/or trans
It all evens out nicely though with the sheer amount of little details everywhere. It all looks convincing at a glance and the game expects you to proceed from setpiece to setpiece quickly
RE6's environments certainly hold up better in closeups than Halo 4's which look like blurry barren wastelands
There's some really fun show-offy stuff in the game like Chris' opening cutscene where some cutscene props are amazingly hyper-detailed like Piers' steak and Chris' glass of vodka. The character models mostly look really nice too
It's definitely a different look from all the Unreal Engine 3 etc. games from the era. It's hard to articulate but I almost get a sort of "PS2 game on steroids" feel from these graphics. Something about the grainy and kind of desaturated textures and often flat-looking surfaces.
Everything's just so densely packed with detail, both large and small scale. These exterior city scenes are massively helped by them being set at night and being lit mainly by neon lights, but there's just so many lights and signs everywhere it really makes things pop. All the interiors are jam-packed with all kinds of little props and wall decorations, and I really like the cramped, dirty and run-down apartment complexes you visit in the game despite them not being all that much fun to play in. They just feel really immersively lived-in.
Here's a really cool location from Chris' campaign that you only visit for a brief boss fight and have no reason to linger in. I didn't even remember this place from my previous playthroughs and probably assumed it was a generic video game dungeon level, but it's really interesting:
https://streamable.com/4ghdg2
You have this dark, grimy and trash-filled inner courtyard in an apartment complex. It looks like it's underground, but it's actually an open-air space that's covered by a netting with sunlight being blocked by the massive amounts of garbage accumulated on said netting, and you also have a dense tangle of electric cables and wires crisscrossing from building to building. Most of the courtyard is taken up by an older brick building that looks like it predates the apartment complex.
It must've taken tons of artists tons of work to design this intricate space that the average player is going to spend less than ten minutes in, and who aren't going to notice the nice environment art anyway since they're too busy trying to electrocute a giant boa constrictor while they're there

I started replaying RE6 after my last post about it and I think that 12 years after launch I'm coming around to forgiving the game
new VA for Frank
...but why? Fans shat on Capcom massively when they recast him for DR4
Reminds me of how the Onimusha 1 remaster on Steam has a completely redone soundtrack and has some (but not all!) of the Japanese VAs recast, once again showing that contracts are a fuck and that you can't trust companies to maintain their back catalogue even when they're trying to
If you want to get into Resident Evil and want to start from the beginning, the HD remaster of the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil 1 is on Steam.
It is often considered one of the greatest remakes of all time and widely thought to surpass the original while preserving everything that made the original great (with the exception of the cheesy FMV cutscenes and dialogue. The remade dialogue is still cheesy but not nearly as funny) unlike the 2/3 remakes that change the games completely.
Technically Resident Evil 0, the HD remaster of which is also on Steam, is the actual beginning of the story in terms of the series' timeline but I would not recommend it to a newcomer. Consider it advanced studies to come back to later.
The only main games which do not have modern PC ports on current storefronts are 2, 3 and Code Veronica and there are multiple ways to experience each on PC.
I grew up with the PS1 so I tend to just emulate those versions for 2 and 3, which is honestly rather painless with Duckstation, but there are plenty of other ways. You could also emulate the Dreamcast or Gamecube ports of said games, and I believe the GC version has a mod for HD backgrounds. There's also the Classic Rebirth Patches for the Japanese-only PC ports which can be found floating about online.
As for CV, you have the original Dreamcast version and the Code Veronica X port for PS2 and the later HD ports of CVX for Xbox 360 and PS3. All four can be emulated, though IIRC there's issues with emulating the 360 version. Also some people are not fans of the changed lighting in the HD remake in general. I just emulate the PS2 version with PCSX2
Are these compatible with the randomisers, Classic Rebirth Patches and other mods people have made over the years or do you still need to track down the old Japanese SourceNext ports?
Edit: Just checked and these are just the old US PC versions made to work with modern systems. That means no mods and that for the best experience you'll still need to pirate the Japanese PC ports
His movements are so dainty !data-laughing
I also appreciate his incredibly period-accurate 1598 drip and pocket watch accessory (not pictured), but I guess he's a god so he can wear whatever he wants
Onimusha Dawn of Dreams ended up being a game about defeating god with the power of friendship, like they literally charge a McGuffin with friendship juice which allows the protagonist to go SSJ3
10/10
The character of the President is introduced and his deep friendship with Leon established in quick cut flashbacks in the same scene that begins as he is already shambling towards Leon moments before he's killed. Just amazing writing !chefs-kiss
How many first families is Leon personal acquaintances with? He's chummy with whomever Ashley's dad was who was POTUS in 2004 as well as the zombie president in office during 2013. I guess he works for the Secret Service so he gets invited to all their barbecues
But now that Summer Solstice is over it's gonna get darker again !boohoo
I have a rechargeable handlebar-mounted LED headlight for my bike and one charge usually lasts me at least 4 months in the summer. Then in the winter I have to charge it every week

Yahtzee talks about how writers for AAA games don't seem to know how to write complex and nuanced female characters and instead resort to brutalising and victimising their female protagonists to give them depth and how the violence they're subjected to is framed differently compared to violence that's done to male characters
I think American Protestants have entered some kind of terminal phase
I have no clue what this is referring to but I assume Sweet Baby Ray's did not in fact send baseball bat-wielding thugs to shake down this game's developers
At least if you live in a place that isn't on fire or cooking to death for its entire duration
I just like seeing trees !blob-no-thoughts
Saw a deer moments before taking this photo !ferret
You have this level that takes place on a mountain, and the devs wanted to have a spot where you could see the gloomy landscape below with more mountains silhouetted in the distance... except this was the PS2 so it's just two jpegs, one for the sky so you can get some parallax and a curved panoramic one for the landscape. It still looks decent enough !shrug-outta-hecks
This era was interesting since you could have pretty detailed character models and environments but still had to use fake backdrops and other tricks for larger environments. Makes you feel like you're on an old movie set
Two guys logically explain why The Boss, a middle-aged war veteran, does not look like a 20-year-old e-girl
Gamers: Well she should look like one anyway

Neither the mouth or the chin or the brow or forehead or zygomatic process feminine in any way in the remake version.
>The boss has deep cheek hollows because they changed her maxilla as well, literally everything they did was to make the Boss look like a ******.

Interestingly, this rash of DMCA takedown requests is apparently related to the Garry's Mod DMCA strikes from a while back. Apparently, copyright protection companies have started using some kind of automated AI service to mass flag and DMCA hosters of infringing material. This is why it's all so haphazard and the emails full of spelling errors
I just saw some person morally grandstand about murder in response to a joke about abortion in a comment section somewhere
It feels so uncanny when it's not suburban Evangelical Karens doing it on Facebook but random people presumably under 30
The love interest character's clothes got destroyed due to plot reasons, so she had to fashion new ones that amount to basically a halter top and hot pants that she wears under her full samurai armour. The main character goes !awooga while another one explains how being half-naked will somehow make her much more mobile during fights. Why aren't the male characters stripping down to their underpants then !thonk
What makes this especially aggravating is that her original outfit was a really cool and non-horny female samurai design !dean-frown
