You know what scares us about big tech? Planned obsolescence.
  • Despite all their drawbacks, I'm keeping my Fairphone and Framework laptop. On the phone, I've replaced the USB socket and the battery, and have upgraded the motherboard on my laptop. It's cheaper and keeps me locked in their ecosystems. Everyone wins, including the environment!

  • Pledge of Allegiance
  • I grew up in the States but never was a citizen. In second grade after a while of this silly ceremony I asked the teacher if I really had to participate, because it didn't really apply to me. And the teacher was totally cool with it!

It was even wierder afterwards, being the only one sitting and watching everyone.

  • Google gets an error-corrected quantum bit to be stable for an hour
  • Because quantum physics. A qubit isn't 0 or 1, it's both and everything in between. You get a result as a distribution, not as distinct values.

Qubits are represented as (for example) quantumly entangled electron spins. And due to the nature of quantum physics, they are not very stable, and you cannot measure a value without influencing it.

Granted, my knowledge of quantum computing is very hand-wavy.

  • RSS pleasantly surprised me
  • To this day I can't fully understand why they did it.

    One word: ads.

With RSS, you have content from various sources in one place, stripped of the ads, without any cookielicious tracking. How are you supposed to monitize that?

  • I've been following F1 since almost 30 years and one thing has been a constant - stupid rule changes, and one thing has been consistently getting worse - the stewarding, especially since Whiting's passing.

Zero consistency and the punishments make zero sense. The mirror was lying around for what, five laps? Didn't seem all that important to them.

  • A part of my family is extremely religious, and borderline fundamentalist. After a while I've been able accept the fact that some people want to know how the world works, and some want to believe.

I know that my death won't be much different than if our dog dies. My consciousness will cease to exist, and I'll either get burnt or decompose. Many people are filled with existential dread and look to religion to comfort them. And that's cool for them.

And then their things beyond your understanding, that you fill with little stories. Sickness isn't something that can be prevented by a shot, it's a punishment. Not getting kids? A punishment. Pork? Haram because Allah said so, not because refrigeration didn't exist. Whatever makes you happy!

The problem I got is that these people are easily lied to and manipulated by authority. The religious right are so easily played by Trump it's embarrassing as a human being.
