if you had put this scene in a tv show i would have called it out for being too cliche and obvious for corrupt cop drug dealing
@frippa@lemmy.ml also i hate eugene like you wouldn't believe. i would imagine it stings their admins to see an unprincipled greedy nerd called out, deep down
you said "first world country" and their blood ran cold
Sure but lots of people have superficial attachments to phrases they pick up online. I've just seen a lot of incoherent/bad irony-mixed-with-sincerity posting and I give people a shot across the bow first. If the followup to being debunked is more playing dumb then you know.
It's not like everyone visiting the site can remember how to counter this story. Keep in mind Montefiore is a very mainstream historian so this will keep coming up. I've seen a lot of people fail to reply to this in full. It's good to remind people about the extent to which the historians we don't read make fallacious claims and how to approach them.
It's a shame, because the entire debunk sort of exposes how desperate people were to heap lies on his legacy.
I really see the whole Lemmy/Reddit moderation strategy as a failed experiment but it hasn't completely killed the sites at least. Extreme pruning down to seriously out of touch people.

Yeah, a shame they immediately removed and banned this person, this was probably just an idiot child. It's not like their one sentence is going to destroy Stalin's legacy.
I would have been happy to explain the other flaws in the historical works of Simon Sebag Montefiore.
To put it simply, he is a pro-Romanov British man who was in Jeffrey Epstein's contact book.
But the "Siberian comedy" treats the alleged victim like a punchline without providing any evidence. He clearly finds it funny.
My first thought is this is like Verso Books and old Zero Books but for the ScheerPost style limited hangout Seymour Hersh/John Mearshimer-quoting spook journalism cultists
I immediately identify a bunch of figures in the ANSWER-Brian Becker-PSL activist NGO complex here.
I don't know why I assumed this would be dwindling in the current Polish climate.
big ouughs from me this week
I think a lot of them are just in a position to have the imaginary class position of being petit boug in the same way a guy with a retirement package and a mortgage has the option of convincing himself the stock market and real estate's ability to Maintain Value are the most important things in the world.
the barista shit is so good but you have to also appreciate them saying prostitutes are petit boug by pointing to people on top of porn multilevel marketing schemes. it's seriously what feds would do if trying to misdirect from real takes abt the labor aristocracy and prostitution, because these guys focus on getting attention to the exclusion of anything else
Interesting find, I haven't had any issues with opening stuff in Firefox yet but could be handy
You don't think Lemmy.world's botting, sockpuppetry, and heavy-handed moderation is extreme lol?
ben should post more and stop worrying about that silly masters degree
Lmao @ the name
Okay I guess hypothetically yes it is better to be able to keep your balance and be more formidable, but this is still preparation for Japanese Trot style street battles instead of accepting that when things come to violence we need to be armed or it turns into a fucking clown fiesta that martial arts training has precious little relevance to
Engaging in martial arts LARP battles is legitimately proud boy agitator shit, there is a leveling aspect to gunfighting (although the statement "God made man, Samuel Colt made them equal" is completely false in every respect) this is a level of escalation that has none of those benefits and many of the negatives. I'm not advocating for people to be defenseless because I think they can't handle having training. Just saying as a strategy this seems bunk to me.
Yeah I am not getting in a street fight sorry. You can't expect anything close to a martial arts situation out there. Police use krav maga chiefly to choke people to death, it's LARP. People will stab you, people will swarm you, you will die horribly if you do this. Yes, working out is great and martial arts can be very fun but the whole framing of it as self defence work seems misguided to me in a modern context it's going to get people to seek out situations to misapply it like you're talking about.
Martial arts gyms love being run by ex cops and generally filled with informants looking for people who want to try to get other means of self defence and get them to break the law.
A lot of people approach every new idea with a system of paranoias instead of critical thinking.
In general I focus more on talking about external affairs that are not meta-social discussion. I have found I will wonder if people are hinting I am being an idiot or something when referencing, for instance how stupid a lot of fitness and diet trends are. In my case the suspicion comes from like, "do they also view me that way?" if that makes sense.
