  • I'd rather AOC knock Schumer out of the Senate in 2028. (Or a special election if he for whatever reason is unable to complete his term.) Congress needs as much replacement as the White House.

But it is really frustrating framing how the article is already conceding Trump will be the dominant candidate for a third term in 2028. That's a long way off.

  • When I first heard 'TERF' I thought it was 'TIRF' for Inclusive. It caused me to inadvertantly piss off some TERFs when I kept treating them as someone who supported trans rights. Like, I thought it meant a person was trans themselves and a radical feminist.

Apparently nothing pisses off a transphobe like attributing a level of humanity they're trying to reject.

Now I know better and I'd fuckin' do it again.

  • There's a bit of a bad faith feedback loop where they started using it as a litmus test for users who are just trying to provoke instance bans, etc. At this point Rule 1 is pretty all encompassing to oblige those users. But it's very easy to catch strays. In some of those communities it's like those classroom lists of banned Gen Z words that get posted around.

  • Now, my comment's intent was more jovial than that. I was noting it because of the volume of cars and multiple lanes juxtaposed nicely with the empty bus lane. It's a long view down an 8-9 lane road. There's not a bus to be seen on the horizon. A snapshot that provided unintended commentary.

Extremely triggering commentary, apparently, for which I do fully regret.

  • Democracy and Capitalism are inextricably linked in American politics. 'Democratic Capitalism' is the predominant social and economic culture.

Changing the capitalism part is as revolting as changing the democracy part.

And that's without trying to disambiguate Social Democracy from Democratic Socialism.

  • It's also double funny that he's calling fucking Schumer a Palestinian, it's like calling Biden a communist, which he also probably said.

Plenty of times. The point of making the absurd claim is because the correction to the error contributes nothing but a deflection from the initial claim.

Trump tweets are pure, unadulterated gish gallup.

  • This is more or less how I found myself paying rent for art. Took limited art classes, just doodled everywhere and was told to stop. Posted stuff online in the early 2000s and caught a few stray commissions.

I felt this and the meme hard.

  • The perception, real or not, of uneven attention from the government is more than enough to keep the feedback loop going.

Universal programs are typically the best shot at breaking through that stasis. And that's, well, acting in the public interest: the anathema of American politics.

  • This is Tennessee. My sister in law just left there after working in rural areas the last few years. She spent time as an aid worker in Kabul and found Tennessee to be worse off.

  • They do tend to passively address the American Overton window in their articles. I think it's pretty easy to navigate as an American because they do it mostly in the same style of our mainstream media.

The overall dynamics of American political language I think can be pretty jarring to both Europeans and any American trying to first learn about socialism.

  • I get what you mean, and it's a common thought and strategy. It just doesn't work as well as one might think. Unless there is a union, employees are at a significant disadvantage. Forming a union would be FAR more effective than quoting OSHA regs.

The main thing is regulatory violations aren't (usually) criminal so there's a long administrative process to most enforcement actions. Companies overwhelmingly have the resources to litigate beyond their employees means. So if they have the resources to have legal council or a compliance officer, there likely needs to be a well documented paper trail of concealment or otherwise flagrant disregard or denial of improved conditions.

There not being A/C isn't enough. Refusing requests to install A/C is better. The company removing workers fans to make a point goes further in a case. Then putting out an internal memo requiring zero ventilation and to lie to investigators is a strong case.

  • The fear of god isn't enforceable. The main thing you do in referencing OSHA is to demonstrate a level of knowledge, commitment, or at least interest in the issue. And most of the time it is the appearance of concealing a condition that is the enforced violation. This is usually what companies are actually sensitive to.

So while an OSHA violation is a serious thing, the conditions in question here (heat) are not a regulation that can be violated and therefore enforced in the same way.
