c/cfb Week 2 Poll Results and Link to Week 3 Poll
  • My ballot -- still a little weird from preseason expectations, but that's mostly factored out now. The bigger issue is that 2-3 weeks of data is too small a sample size for the computer to know what to do with. Teams that played P4 teams are very high (even if they lost), whereas teams that played FCS schools are very low (even if they blew them out). Teams that already had a bye are even lower (exacerbated by this season having an extra bye week). It should all be sorted out in a couple weeks.

I will say, by eye test I really disagree with some of these rankings (I mean, ou up to number 4???) but I find the pure data intriguing, especially for spots 40ish through 134 which a lot of people ignore. I'm considering a few tweaks (to diminish the effects of garbage time stat padding), but it would make the algorithm more complex. Without fully automating it, I need to keep it simple enough to tabulate semi-manually every week. Hoping I can use next offseason to tinker with some scripts.

  • Iowa State football kicker Kyle Konrardy wins 54 boxes of Pop-Tarts for kick vs. Iowa
www.desmoinesregister.com Iowa State football kicker Kyle Konrardy wins 54 boxes of Pop-Tarts for kick vs. Iowa

"54 boxes for 54 yards" Iowa State football kicker Kyle Konrardy won Pop-Tarts ‘Crazy Good’ Play of the Week for game-winning kick against Iowa.

Iowa State football kicker Kyle Konrardy wins 54 boxes of Pop-Tarts for kick vs. Iowa

    > In Iowa State football kicker Kyle Konrardy's case, "the spoils" are 54 boxes of Pop-Tarts. On Tuesday, the Football Writers Association of America named the redshirt freshman's last-minute 54-yard kick to beat Iowa the Pop-Tarts "Crazy Good" Play of the Week. > > As a prize for Konrardy, the Pop-Tarts Bowl, which annually features a team from the Big 12 taking on a team from the ACC, sent Konrardy plenty of pastries to keep him and his teammates fueled throughout the upcoming bye week. > > The Cyclones (2-0) also changed their profile picture on X. Instead of a celebration shot from the team's Cy-Hawk win over its biggest rival, they opted for something more subtle. Now, whenever Iowa State football posts something, followers are greeted with a photo of Konrardy staring at the camera, holding about 13 boxes of pop tarts.

  • So just checking, are we supposed to submit our ballots for week 3 in the link above? Because I did, but looking at the results it seems like it might still have week 2 ballots as well.

  • Deion Sanders Banned Colorado Band From Playing Fight Song After Shedeur Touchdowns So That His Rap Song Could Play
  • If I were the band director, I'd play it anyway. He doesn't have authority over them. Why even have a marching band if they can't play the fight song?

If you want to make it all about your son, how about commissioning the band for some theme music they could play just for him or something. I wouldn't have nearly as much distrust and distaste for Sanders if he could just be integrate into a school's culture and traditions rather than parasitically replacing them with his own cult of personality.

Sounds like even Joel Klatt is souring on the Sanders experiment, so it might not be long until the whole fan base is calling for him to go (although I'm sure he's planning on leaving after this season anyway)

  • AP Top 25 Poll - Sep 8, 2024
  • The cowards ranked NIU!

But a lot of these seem suspect given the results yesterday. How do OK St and KSU move up? Related, why did Tulane stop receiving votes, especially since they pushed KSU around most of the game? Notre Dame doesn't fall farther (or out completely)? Alabama doesn't slide a little for messing around with USF (the final score does not tell the story of how that game went)?

And I feel like there's not enough credit given to Nebraska (who took it easy on CU), Clemson (shouldn't be punished too much for falling to #1 UGA), and Illinois (who beat a pretty good Kansas squad).

Voters just peeping the box score and relying on name brands, as is tradition

[GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • Just curious, is there a good week for him to be fired? Especially since the back of the schedule is such a gauntlet, it seems like it would set up an interim for failure.

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • Very nice pick six! I'm confused by the play call/throw though. I probably would take that out of the play book if I were NC State.

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • Real impressed with what I've seen from Raiola so far. Future looking bright for y'all

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • So are there going to be any Duke's mayo shenanigans like with the bowl game? Maybe a mayo bath for the loser rather than the winner (seems like that would be more motivating)?

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • Fair enough. I was thinking about 2022 with the loss to Marshall (maybe not fair to judge a coach in their first year). You might be right about last week's game being fool's gold. Shades of the 2016 Texas-ND game where both of us had a terrible year.

Hope things turn around for y'all...

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • I don't understand why this is as close as it is. Does Marcus Freeman only get the team hyped up for big games? I know full well how painful that is, as that was Texas under Tom Herman...

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • I will only feel welcome in the SEC once Texas beats Georgia. Hopefully we can do that once or twice this season.

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • Actually tuning away from my Texas game because it's so lopsided. K-State just got a scoop n' score in this one. I was hoping the Green Wave could hold on to their lead but this is probably the turning point in this game

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • Very uncharacteristic of Loveland to cough up the ball like that. Normally I'd be real annoyed about it, but they're playing my alma mater so shrug

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • Man, I wish I could pay more attention to the 20K-State @ Tulane game. Really curious how the Wildcats have struggled so much in the first half so far

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • So we lose Baxter in the preseason, and Blue goes down in this game. :( It's a good thing Wisner has stepped up, otherwise the RB room would be pretty bare. Hope Blue is okay.

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • I'm thinking that 17Georgia Tech at Syracuse is lowkey the most interesting matchup in the early window.

  • [GAMEDAY] Saturday, September 8, 2024 (Texas @ Michigan, El Assico, CU @ NU, and others)
  • 2Texas at 12Michigan

Super frustrating to have a touchdown taken away because of a holding penalty, and then missing the FG. But there will be plenty of opportunities to score. Although I'm a fan of both teams, the Michigan team is a husk of what they were last year and I really expect my Longhorns to push them around, especially later in the game

Edit to add: I really do not like the CGI Allstate FG nets. But I guess it has me talking about them, so advertising works, I guess?

  • [GAMEDAY] Friday Sep 6th (BYU @ SMU, WIU @ IU, Duke @ NW)
  • In the SMU-BYU game, very intriguing recovered muffed punt return by BYU. Ruled that the SMU guy was not blocked into the punt, but it was close, and made me realize I'm not sure I've seen that penalty actually called before.

Also, while I like SMU's fight song, they are playing it an awful lot

  • c/cfb Week 2 Poll Results and Link to Week 3 Poll
  • Updated the banner and sidebar!

I see I'm catching a lot of flack here for my computer poll (and understandably so), to which I say: vote in the poll! The more participants, the more my funky algorithm gets drowned out. I will say, I did tweak it this year to further devalue preseason expectations, but I can't let it just stand on 1.5 weeks of data. Preseason expectations get fully flushed out after week 4.

Also, because the transfer portal makes it so hard to get a read on rosters early in the season, I outsourced the returning production variable to Action Network's metric. It worked pretty well last year, but I'm not sure they're on the mark this year. If anyone has a better source (that is free or cheap), I'm willing to give it a try for next year.

Big 12 presidents pitched on potential UConn addition, but lack of consensus likely to prolong decision

Big 12 presidents pitched on potential UConn addition, but lack of consensus likely to prolong decision

Details presented today to the conference members on adding UConn, and apparently only 6 schools in favor at this time (needs 12 to pass).

I've listened to a few Yormark interviews and he seems super fixated on adding UConn for some reason, even after adding the 4 corner schools. I kind of saw the appeal before the PAC-12 crumbled, but at this point it really doesn't make much sense.

MIAMI – On Tuesday, Florida International University (FIU) Athletics announced a groundbreaking partnership with international superstar and entrepreneur Armando Christian Pérez, better known as Pitbull.

FIU Athletics, Pitbull Announce Unprecedented Partnership And Naming Of Football Stadium - FIU Athletics

    From the article:

    > The 10-year agreement will see FIU Stadium rebranded as Pitbull Stadium, making it the world's first-ever athletics venue with an artist possessing the naming rights.

Didn't see it in the press release but my understanding is that Pitbull basically will get to use the stadium as his own concern venue as much as he likes.

    Coaching Carousel Megathread

I know, this is the 3rd megathread this week, but let's face it: there's a lot of news this time of year. Even I hadn't been able to keep up with the coaching carousel (when I saw Texas was losing Choate, I didn't even know the Nevada job had opened).

So without further ado, here's the current list of FBS HC moves (I'll update it as it spins along):

    • Boise State: Andy Avalos replaced by Spencer Danielson (interim Boise State HC/DC)
    • Duke: Mike Elko replaced by Manny Diaz (Penn State DC & Miami HC)
    • Houston: Dana Holgerson replaced by Willie Fritz (Tulane HC)
    • Indiana: Tom Allen replaced by Curt Cignetti (JMU HC)

    • New Mexico: Danny Gonzales replaced by Bronco Mendenhall (UVA HC & BYU HC)
    • Northwestern: Pat Fitzgerald replaced by David Braun (interim Northwestern HC)
    • Oregon State: Jonathan Smith replaced by Trent Bray (Oregon State DC)
    • San Diego State: Brady Hoke (retired) replaced by Sean Lewis (Colorado OC & Kent State HC)
    • Syracuse: Dino Babers replaced by Fran Brown (Georgia DBs coach)
    • Texas A&M: Jimbo Fisher replaced by Mike Elko (Duke HC)
    • Troy: Jon Sumrall still vacant
    • Tulane: Willie Fritz replaced by Jon Sumrall (Troy HC)
    • ULM: Terry Bowden replaced by Bryant Vincent (New Mexico OC & UAB interim HC)
    • UTEP: Dana Dimel replaced by Scotty Walden (Austin Peay HC & Southern Miss interim HC)
    • Wyoming: Craig Bohl (retired) replaced by Jay Sawvell (Wyoming DC)

Think your AD got the right guy? Want to vent about a hire? Disappointed your coach isn't gone? Let me know in the comments!

Transfer Portal Megathread - December 2023

Jan 1: I'm working on updating this today so stay tuned for a better list after the semifinal games (assuming I don't break some sort of Lemmy post character limit)

    ---

The December window of the transfer portal opened today! Hope all the coaches are having fun recruiting their own players!

    !

It's a fire hose of tweets out there, with over 400 players entering the portal just this morning. To cut down on potential posts of screenshots of the notes app on the phones of 18-22 year-olds, let's keep the discussion in this thread.

I'm compiling a rudimentary list of names in the portal as I see news, but I'm not going to sink too much time into this. If I miss anything, please let me know in a comment!

Willie Fritz Named Houston Football Head Coach
uhcougars.com Willie Fritz Named Houston Football Head Coach - University of Houston Athletics

Willie Fritz, the back-to-back American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year who boasts 31 years of collegiate head coaching experience, has been named the 16th head coach in University of Houston football history, Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman announced Sunday.

Willie Fritz Named Houston Football Head Coach - University of Houston Athletics

    > 247-121-1 all-time as a head coach

I knew he was successful (even before Tulane), but didn't realize he has the 5th most all-time wins among active FBS head coaches. I think he's a home-run hire for UH.

There's also this press release from today where he was officially introduced.
