Americans' refusal to keep paying higher prices may be dealing a final blow to US inflation spike
  • There are zero (0) transit stops between where I live and where I work.

I considered taking the train to my last job, but like the other poster said, it was both slower and more expensive. Not to mention step 1 was drive to the nearest location, because walking for half an hour on a 4-lane divided highway where people do 70mph is not a great idea.

They could totally make mass transit work here, but you know, racism.

  • Hyundai and Kia car thefts fall sharply after software upgrade, study finds
  • There really isn't a way to realistically shield against relay attacks. Most people say "just go back go physical keys", but those are even less secure.

Phone-as-key and keycard systems are vulnerable in the same way.

  • Awnings: a simple cooling tech we apparently forgot about
  • This is the real reason they disappeared - awnings cost money and don't increase square footage. That's also why every modern building is a boring box.

We didn't forget about them, it's still covered in architecture school. You can even make them look really cool. But they cost money, and that's a hard barrier to cross.

  • Americans, what's the plan if Trump wins the election in November? (serious)
  • It takes less money to move than you might think to move. If you have a specialty (especially in STEM) it’s really easy, and most jobs will even provide language classes for free.

Unfortunately I picked the wrong specialty (architecture). Still trying to get licensed by the end of the year, that's the only chance I have at another country maybe recognizing my degree. Regardless, it's not very in-demand.

  • Male birth control breakthrough safely switches off fit sperm for a while
  • My recovery was honestly pretty bad. I was bed-ridden for about 2 weeks, then 8-ish months of aching pain all day every day. Not actually sure when it finally cleared up, I just realized I hadn't felt the pain in a while. My first nut was about a month after the procedure, and that was also a very unpleasant experience.

My case is abnormal, but even more rare is the guys that continue to be in pain for the rest of their lives. Didn't find out about that until I started digging deeper because of my persistent pain.

That said, I still 100% recommend getting it done.

  • Someone purchased the old domain of a FOSS app, then it's using it to deceive users to download adware
  • Gotta get creative to get any decent addresses these days. I've been trying to establish a company name (with an available, short-ish, simple URL) and it's surprisingly difficult, even getting into weird TLDs. Really annoying, especially since a lot of them aren't actually being used.

Finally found a 9 character made-up word that I could get the .us TLD for, and I think that's about as good as it's going to get.

  • 54% of young Americans say food costs are the biggest strain on their finances
  • I literally said in my comment that Soylent is a splurge that could be replaced with oatmeal. I don't get it to be cheap, I get it because I like it and it's pretty good nutritionally. Make that change and you're under $30, like I usually am outside of that.

Here was this week's cost, including splurging on a 1lb bag of nuts for snacking: https://i.postimg.cc/GmSJWVxp/Screenshot-20240509-111904.png

More importantly I was replying to your "only ramen or rice and beans" comment, because I don't eat either of those. I could reduce my costs further if I did, but I like what I eat and don't need to save money on my food budget.

  • 54% of young Americans say food costs are the biggest strain on their finances
  • I spend about that if you exclude my splurge on Soylent for breakfast (substitute oatmeal, for example). I eat wraps that are 90% veggies for lunch and the premix Birdseye veggie/chicken dinners where I can get 2 meals per bag.

  • Day one and done
  • I mean, depends on the frozen pizza. 99% of them are worse, but there's one brand I get at wally world for like $7 a pizza that is better than 99% of the pizza I can order (and we have some pretty solid pizza joints around here).

Had to quit getting them though because they're like 6000 kcal.

  • Friends don't let friends buy HiDPI displays
  • Fractional scaling in Windows is still eh, largely because they can't do a whole lot about icons not designed for that scale. For example in Rhino a bunch of the icons get weird pixel doubling when running 150% because they were designed for 100% and use a lot of 1 pixel wide elements.

It's honestly the main reason I keep hanging on to my now 10 and 15 year old displays. I'm hoping for a 6k 32" display so I can run true 200%. Dell makes one but they put a stupid webcam forehead on it.

  • You also need to be careful when deleting your account - when you do, they'll send you a "there was an issue with your request" email that tries to get you to register again by prompting you to "log in" to fix it. The log in is creating a password for a new account.
