Reddit CEO Suggests Some Subreddits Could Be Paywalled
  • Could make sense. If they're smart, they're trying to get a cut of the "exclusive Discord", patreon, Substack kind of money flow.

If they're wildly stupid, they'll try to take over and paywall popular existing subreddits.

  • What happened to "You're welcome!" as a response to "Thank You"? It's not even included in the canned answers on an apple watch. Have we as a society abandoned it?
  • See, that's much closer to "(It was) my pleasure", which is a valid English response (though these days it puts people in the mind of "Chick-fil-A employee") than it is "You're welcome".

  • Did the year zero never exist ?
  • I feel you've missed the point I was making and assumed I've made another. Age number and year number are different. You're in your first year when your age is not yet 1. You're in your second year when your age is between 1 and 2.

Years follow numbers as in "this year was the first/second/third year of ", not "this year was the year turned X years old"

  • Did the year zero never exist ?
  • The language is rooted in the same logic as people. Your first year was between the ages of 0 and 1. The first year before you were born is between -1 and 0. There is no 0th year because 0 is a point in time and not a range in time.

  • Beeper is now available, no waitlist!
  • Love the CEO sketches! And they're not even in the top five things Brennan has done, probably!

  • What. Can I have timing to 3 decimal points please?
  • If you're a little clever with interpolation, you don't need to run at 1000s of frames per second! You'd just calculate how much time after the last frame it would take to cross the line at the last known speed and position.

  • Sir, did you just fill an old timey beer stein with soda?

  • Favorite Charities?
  • You're right-- I am in the States, but your input is still welcome!

I don't have an Awesome Socks subscription, but I do have a Sun Basin Soap one with good.store! I like Daydreamer, even though it sorta reminds me of allspice (and therefore chicken).

  • Canonical's Steam Snap is Causing Headaches for Valve
  • Snaps are a relatively recent way of packaging application installations in certain flavors of Linux. Steam is Valve's game distribution platform (amongst other things).

There's an unofficial Snap package to install Steam and it apparently doesn't work so good

  • In United States, what are the benefits of getting legally married?
  • American marriage tax codes are written to benefit the sort of couple with a stay-at-home-spouse. Having one person without an income (or with a significantly lower income) in the marriage effectively pulls you down in the tax brackets as a whole.

  • Favorite Charities?
  • Thanks for the input, all! I've had a bunch of the more 'obvious' ones down, but there are a few that I hadn't heard of (like CASA and Feeding America, who I have 'equivalents' to but will likely diversify out to), or hadn't thought to contribute to (Propublica, UNHCR). Good stuff, everybody.

  • Favorite Charities?

What are your favorite charities? What do you regularly give to? I have some empty space in my "secular tithing" budget that I'm looking to fill in.

TIL that operating system Linux is an example of anarcho-communism
  • Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and capitalist hardware.

    Fire at will, commander.

  • What is a piece of media that has changed your life?
  • Homestuck.

Not in the reading of it, which I did out of the momentum of Bard quest and Problem Sleuth, but in the way that it rippled through the online media landscape and affected discourse and things like Undertale, webcomics, and crowd funding.

Not in any "profound" way, but in a measurably gigantic one.

  • Thinking about the direction of Beehaw
  • Without substantial growth after being cut off from the activity of the fediverse, Beehaw would not be large enough to stave off serious atrophy. The lemmy/kbin end of the fediverse is already very slow to begin with.

  • Why do Lemmy users rarely use emoticons?
  • The double period is simultaneously the most elderly thing and outside of any style guide.

  • My opinionated list of FOSS applications
  • Had syncthing gotten better? When I tried it like... Years ago before moving to the more centralized Nextcloud, it has a habit of "restoring" files I had deleted from the other instances.

  • Chat GPT Did NOT Like My Memory Test
  • Yeah, between the image compression and resolution, a lot of things that should be 'gaps' in the letters are closing up. Like, the 's' in 'psuedorandom' or 'set' looks like a squished-up 'g'.

I can read individual words as I'm looking at them, but I've lost the ability to scan the line and parse words in my peripheral vision.

  • The whole point of thieves cant is that it seems like 'normal' speech to outsiders, though. It just hides illicit meanings within, while sounding like very bland/innocent common (or whatever is used as the mask). Undercommon is immediately noticeable as foreign and pointed out.

  • TC on open source evangelists
  • Multiple monitors, touch screens, tablet digitizers remain a letdown constantly. Not always fully broken, but falling just short enough that actually fixing it is a pain and just living without the feature (or Linux) is easier.

  • How long do you keep dailying a phone after the security updates for it end?

Phones are getting better support lives these days, but they still physically outlast their software support. How important is that safety net/blanket for you?

Did anyone else 'lose' a bunch of comments/posts?

My profile currently shows that I've made 1 post and 11 comments, which tracks with what I remember doing, but only two of those comments (and no post) seem to be showing up in my profile when I view it. Has anyone else had part of their lemmy history vanish into the ether?
