  • Beehaw on Lemmy: The long-term conundrum of staying here
  • I used to spend loads of time on forums (mostly for metalheads), and also the late and great Barbelith.

Let the forum follow the function.

  • Speaking of Bands Changing their Sound...
  • I'm a big fan of stonerrock and doom, and a lot of bands within those genres have a tendency to remain pretty much the same, musically, lyrically and atmospherically. Bands like orange goblin, fu manchu, nebula, weedeater, acid king, bongzilla, sleep, dopelord, conan, etc. do not change that much about their music over time. Which is fine by me, not all bands have to reinvent themselves to remain interesting to me.

  • (Mis)representation of language in Hollywood movies
  • Yeah it's pretty weird how a lot of actors are cast to play russians, except people of actual russian background. I wonder why that is, holdover from cold war sentiment? or are there just too few Russian actors in hollywood?

  • What are the Rules For the Mosh Pit?
  • Also, +1 for picking people up that fall down and holding up a shoe/pair of glasses/hat/etc. that you find on the ground.

The first time I went to a metal gig (Iced Earth) I lost my glasses and people actually stopped to help me look for them. Amazingly, they were unbroken.

  • What are the Rules For the Mosh Pit?
  • this is the most important rule

  • What are the Rules For the Mosh Pit?
  • 1: No nasty spikes intended to harm 2: Someone falls, you pick em up 3: No aiming for the face 4: Don't keep in people who clearly want no part of the pit

  • Disappearing Deliverables / Porch Piracy

So last week I ordered some new earplugs for concerts, bandpractice and such, and they have failed to arrive. I'm a pretty patient dude so I wait for a couple of days thinking it's just taking a bit longer.

Browsing through my mail I find out that they have apparently been delivered days ago.

Now the earplugs I ordered were clear, but I highly doubt they are invisible. No card was left in the mailbox, no "hey we delivered it at your neighbor's place even though you were home..." Checking the track and trace says it was delivered yet they are not.

I try not to assume malice, but I'm pretty peeved about this, and it has got me wondering what your experiences are with goods that have mysteriously vanished upon delivery?

    You are correct :)

  • (Mis)representation of language in Hollywood movies
  • While it is possible for others who do not speak the language to be sufficiently fooled into believing he spoke it fluently, it would be really weird if a university lecturer would give lectures in a nonexistent language without anyone commenting on it.

  • (Mis)representation of language in Hollywood movies

Through the years I've noticed that quite a few Hollywood films play fast and loose with any other language than English.

I was watching Oppenheimer yesterday and the titular character was supposed to be speaking Dutch fluently, but the actual lines spoken were mostly jibberish, and more like German than Dutch. As a native speaker, I found this quite jarring and sloppy. Though I can imagine that to non-native speakers this would probably fly under the radar.

This got me thinking if there were more examples of shoddy translation, weird pronunciation, mishandling of language or dialect that you as a native speakers have noticed when watching movies?

Have you ever been at the junction of a fork in your life's road and not known what to do? How did you get through it?
  • The zen coin flip was the first thing I thought of when reading OP's post.

Like you states, it does not replace the act of choosing.

But you can gauge by your own reaction to the result of the coin flip, which option you think deep down is the best.

  • What are some game genres / styles you like that aren't being made anymore, or are being mde but not very often?
  • Used to play a lot of RTS, both single and multiplayer. The last one I bought was the new AoE game. It did scratch a bit of the itch, but on the whole was a letdown. Before that it was Iron Harvest, which was visually pleasing but clunky. I am still looking for an RTS I can really get lost in.

    Any recommendations?

  • You might like the game tyranny. Just finished playing it and it was quite enjoyable.

  • The wonderful world of potatoes
  • Ooh, I have my own version of this:

    Ingredients:

    4 large Crumbly potatoes

    1 Onion (large)

    2 Eggs (large)

    Grated cheese (preferably Gouda)

Herbs: Salt, pepper, oregano, paprika powder.

Cut the potatoes in equal sizes cubes, Par-boil the cubes.

Then put them in a large frying pan with lots of butter, bake until browning\Maillard starts.

Then throw in the onions, fruiting them, then add the two beaten eggs.

Add the cheese on top, with the salt, pepper and herbs.

Put the lid on, let it settle on low heat for ten minutes.

    Great hangover food.

How Can Anyone Object to ‘15 Minute Cities’?
  • One thing I noticed when travelling through the states is how many American cities have no city centre with just pedestrian traffic. Everything is made with cars in mind, everything is a thoroughfare. In the city where I live in the Netherlands, I can get on my bike and be in the city centre within fifteen minutes. It's faster to get there by bike, than it is by car. and the city is better for it.

I like going to the market on foot, visiting the city centre on foot, going to pubs, and restaurants, and everything you want out of a city on foot, bike or public transit. You guys would like it too if you convinced city planners to give it a try.

  • Looking for a casual game that I can quickly pick up or put down
  • Another easy auto-battler would be Super auto pets. Easy to play on short breaks.
