best alternative to windows file explorer?
  • I will be off topic as what I am going to suggest is not open source... But I myself looked for a long time what was the best free windows file manager and I settled up on FreeCommander.
By default UI is not nice but it's possible to make it nice enough.

I use this one mainly because : you can use it for free, dual pan, it remembers tab history between sessions, tabs can be renamed and colored. Hope someone will suggest a good open source one but I don't think there is any :-/

  • Open Source Everything: A curated list of the best open source software
  • On windows for a screenshot tool a good one is ShareX. and for a clipboard manager Ditto

  • Communities search crashes app
  • I think you are experiencing the same bug as this one : https://codeberg.org/Bazsalanszky/Eternity/issues/236
It has been fixed in nightly.

  • qBitController has been updated to Material You and released v1.0.0
  • I would say VueTorrent has more features. Yet on Android as it's not an app you can't make it open magnet links or torrents when tapping / downloading one.
That would be great to have it as an app or to be able to turn it into a pwa.

  • What are we doing for TVs these days software wise?
  • +1 that's what I do at home with my desktop and what is IMHO the best solution.
Yet on vacation I use an old android box with Android Tv (SlimTv) and I have to say it's nice to have a dedicated interface allowing use of a remote.

  • In search for a good VPN
  • IMHO I am not an expert but Mullvad seems the best (from what I read from others) and I would stick with it. I am using it and happy with it. I also appreciate that their monthly price do not change depending on how many months you subscribe and that there is no bullshit discount for the first x months.
You could also look at Proton VPN if you need port forwarding.

About SurfShark don't have much opinion !

  • Sub.club is here to help the fediverse make money
  • I don't understand the down votes
=> I always read up and down votes as a tool to flag valuable posts. It feels like down vote on this one is about agreement with the news?

  • Anyone else hyped for the upcoming Ranma ½ remake?
  • I will probably try it but I am not expecting much. I wasn't a fan of the old one. Not to offense anyone but I felt like it was dumb.
Still it looks like a lot of people are hyped about it so maybe I will be surprised !

  • Using *display* name for sorting communities in drawer

Communities in left drawer are alphabetically sorted by default. Yet the sort is based on names and not on displayed names. Is there some option that I didn't found to change it? Or could it be fixed or added as an option? I know I could sort manually but it's not ideal when adding new communities.

For instance episode_discussion@ani.social use "Anime episode discussions" as display name. When I search for my anime subscribed communities I often forget it as the sort looks like it's wrong with what boost display as community name. 😕

Grandmother survives in wilderness by drinking rainwater and ‘talking to a fox’
  • I guess she hadn't a phone on her or she was off grid? It would have been nice if article mentioned it. Without that info I have doubts about whether the story is true or not... 🤔

  • Subscription fatigue: when will enough be enough?
  • What I find annoying is for what you occasionally use.

For instance I started to listen more frequently to a songs service (which I was bypassing ads) and so I thought to officially subscribe. When I looked at prices I didn't because it was too costly and knowing me I could stop anyday to use it. Price for one was above 10 when for two it was something like 14 so 7 per person and which I would have been ok to pay. Good for me because I stopped to listen some weeks after and it has beek years I didn't really use it.

I think, especially for video and audio media consumption, you should pay a global amount and it should be split between services you used. Split should be based on usage.

  • State of Nova Launcher
  • Perfect thanks. I looked at your profil and your old comments to determine if you were Kevin. Maybe it would have been obvious for a lot of people but I really thought : "hey is it really nova's dev on lemmy? That would be so cool for Lemmy !"

  • State of Nova Launcher
  • Not to be annoying but you should edit to make it clear you are not Kevin Barry and you are just quoting.

  • Google Chrome warns uBlock Origin may soon be disabled
  • On my work computer I don't have admin rights but still I could install Firefox with no problems. It installed itself for local user only.

  • Google Chrome warns uBlock Origin may soon be disabled
  • About that you can check this new extension : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/chrome-mask/

Yet I feel it's better to avoid using it and report web compatibility problems. Always masking user agent could led to believe only supporting chrome is sufficient.

  • Local only finance tracker with backup/restore feature?
  • Using MyExpenses which is perfect to let you track your bank accounts.

It's the only app I found which let you reconcile operations with bank statement.

  • Authy got hacked, and 33 million user phone numbers were stolen
  • What I do is using synching to sync my files on my PC when I am at home. You could also manually back it up on a cloud drive.

Anyway I think it's best practice to store somewhere recovery codes.

  • Aegis is often recommended as an open source solution : https://github.com/beemdevelopment/Aegis

  • SAM: Software Automatic Mouth
  • Hate those posts only containing link.. Feeling like I am looking at a news aggregator with click bait...

For those feeling like me here a simple cut and paste :

Sam is a very small Text-To-Speech (TTS) program written in Javascript, that runs on most popular platforms. It is an adaption to Javascript of the speech software SAM (Software Automatic Mouth) for the Commodore C64 published in the year 1982 by Don't Ask Software (now SoftVoice, Inc.). It includes a Text-To-Phoneme converter called reciter and a Phoneme-To-Speech routine for the final output.

  • Community icon in compact mode

Please make option for displaying community icon works in compact mode. I much prefer this mode but the lack of icons make it difficult to quickly identify community.

torrentfreak.com RARBG's Demise Gave These Torrent Sites a Huge Boost in Traffic * TorrentFreak

Three months after the sudden demise of RARBG numerous well known torrent sites appear to have benefited from a surprise gap in the market.

For those interested in public torrent usage. No surprise, after RARBG closed it's traffic has been mostly transfered to Torrent Galaxy.
