America is in danger of Fascism
  • China has an active genocide going on, recently effectively annexed Hong Kong, and is threatening Taiwan. They're also a dictatorship, while the US at least has some semblance of democracy. A country like that exerting their power over the world unchecked seems in no way better. Probably not really worse than the US either, at least whenever there's a republican president.

  • Withholding Apple Intelligence from EU a 'stunning declaration'
  • If I'm interpreting the quote correctly, it's because if they have to exclude the EU because of competition laws, that implies they know it's anticompetitive in some eay, yet roll it out elsewhere anyway.

Which shouldn't be surprising though, if companies refrained from anticompetitive behaviour because they think it's wrong, we wouldn't need these laws.

  • CDPR says its new Boston studio means Cyberpunk 2 will be more authentically American
  • It's more that those things likely never crossed anyones mind during development. A lot of everyday things you just assume are the way they are where you live everywhere, until you see they aren't. And even being aware of that you are always going to miss things.

I doubt this had any actual influence on which studio ended up working on the game, but it is a nice side effect.

  • Steam announces game recording beta.
  • Achievements or multiplayer matching not being implemented in the game itself isn't on GOG. They still allow you to download and launch any game you've bought, without even requiring galaxy.

Also lesser known is the fact that there are DRM-free games on steam. Download them once, you can play without having steam running or even installed. Using a client to download isn't inherently DRM either.

  • Religious leader wants to display Indian scriptures in Louisiana public classrooms
  • Because they don't actually worship satan, rather exist solely to highlight religious (especially christian, given them being US-based) hypocrisy. The name choice and theming around satanic symbols was probably done more to symbolize going against the reality of christianity than anything to do with christian myths about satan, as well as to specifically piss off those christians that go on about religious freedom but are against the satanic temple getting the same freedoms as the christian church.

  • 10/10 kids books.
  • I recall two enjoyable books, both by Morton Rhue, being boot camp and the wave (and one that I liked but most people didn't, kafka's metamorphosis. Sure didn't like having to interpret that though).

At least early on they tried making us read enjoyable books, as in modern books aimed at teenagers, they just... weren't very good.

I think the peak of unenjoyment for me was Das Parfüm, which is technically somewhat modern. I tried reading it and was so bored I just couldn't continue, ended up reading a synopsis somewhere and pretended to know what i was talking about.

At least it never killed reading for me because by the time school made me read books I was already reading fantasy novels in my free time anyway.

  • How many people actually want fully on-site IT jobs?
  • Personally I just like my colleagues so it's fun to be around them for the most part, and there are better lunch options around the office in my case (plus I'd never bother going somewhere when I'm home anyway). It being easier to just quickly ask a question is nice too. Also gets me actually out of the house and cycling for ~40 minutes a day. I also get way more done at work because working at the same pc I spend 90% of my free time at is not great at motivating my brain to do work.

Still, if I didn't have the option to just stay home when I don't feel like going to the office/am waiting for a package or something, I'd find that very annoying.

  • When does investing become gambling?
  • Shorting, crypto trading, options are all gambling. Long term investments are usually not.

One is hoping that the price will go a certain way in the short term. The other is giving a company money so they hopefully turn it into more money. that is the difference, nothing to do with casinos.

  • Just a reminder to never trust Google Translate
  • Duden apparently agrees but it's a rare enough use case that I've never heard it used that way in my life, fair enough tho. Still not a great default tl but at least somewhat acceptable then.

  • Just a reminder to never trust Google Translate
  • I distrust DeepL ever since I found out it translates "irritating" into german as "irritierend" (which means confusing, and is a common mistranslation for obvious reasons). Though I'm sure google translate does similar dumb things.

  • Casual time dyslexia
  • I also do that. I've missed appointments because of it even. I've learned to just repeat in 24 hour format and get a confirmation to make sure I didn't fuck it up (helps that I live in a country where 24 hour is the default in everything other than speech, where it's mixed, so there's 0 chance the other person will have trouble with 24 hour time).

  • White House Announces Strategy to Keep Edible Food Out of Landfills
  • If the food has longer shelf life, stores can keep the same amount of stock as now and sell everything before it goes bad.

Of course, the easy way would be for stores to not stock as much of food that is likely to go bad before all of it is sold, but then they make less money and also customers would cry that they sometimes can't get everything they want.

  • One in five children on the planet is now overweight or obese.
  • Yeah I know, I just meant to state I can see where the initial doubt comes from. I already saw the study further up and the reasoning makes sense.

Though I think with dieting in particular general trends are very hard to apply to individuals (most obvious offender being BMI).

  • One in five children on the planet is now overweight or obese.
  • Yea i can absolutely see that. Though it's also understandable to doubt it because personally it just doesn't apply - which I think is largely because I don't changr my portion sizes, and I'm probably not the only one. I make food and eat all of it, and I usually eat 2 meals a day + sometimes breakfast. I've found that delaying food intake for as long as possible leads to me eating less overall and losing weight.

In my case, eating breakfast or not is more of a result of how much I ate the previous day.

  • What America really needs
  • They're nowhere near the top if you relate it to size though (and also next to none of it is electrified, which is a pretty good indicator of it being mostly old - after all, rail is what even allowrd the country to be built).

    But also it's a joke
