Nearly all major car companies are sabotaging EV transition, and Japan is worst, study finds
  • Is there a number on the break even point where it’s better for the environment to buy a new EV than to keep driving an old ICE vehicle? I bike most days when I don’t need to buy more than a backpack of groceries or go more than 3 miles. Surely when you consider the carbon cost of refining materials and constructing a whole new vehicle, it doesn’t make sense in most situations for people who drive less than 30 minutes a day on average. This is of course assuming you have a current vehicle, new vehicles should have to be hybrid/EV in the modern era.

  • Thousands of Android TV devices come with unkillable backdoor preinstalled
  • I bought a Hisense and it had the option during setup to disable most smart features and leave it in “basic mode”. I was already going to put an Apple TV in it so I just left it there and I’ve been happy. Only thing a tv needs is settings and the ability to change inputs.

  • Reddit is getting rid of its Gold awards system
  • Yeah I’m in the same bucket. Once libreddit dies, I’m off Reddit for good. I still like to browse some of the communities that aren’t fully established on Lemmy yet there and libreddit is he only thing that makes it palatable. I can’t stand reddit deciding to only show you the first comment in a chain of 30 and asking you to log in to see the rest.

  • Does anyone have experience with building a NAS for their Mac?

I’m really looking into building a NAS for my Mac. I got the 256gb MacBook Air and currently back up the machine using a nvme drive over type c but having to plug it in to access video files and backup every couple days is not ideal. With how cheap physical storage is now, a NAS seems like a good solution. Does anyone have a NAS at home and can share the software and hardware needed to make it run smoothly?

  • Better voice to text. I’ve been acting like a boomer a lot more recently by dictating things into text fields and judging from the accuracy of the LLM models like whisper, I could seriously see myself using voice to text for everything that doesn’t need to be spelled out.

  • Anyone else looking to replace their accessories with USB-C once the got updated?
  • I’m pretty excited for usb-c but you’re right, it’ll take a while. I’m still not entirely certain if I want to trade in my 11 since it’s still running just fine, but I also have the fiancés 12 mini, both our airpods, and my 9th gen iPad that we don’t plan on replacing anytime soon so we’ll need at least one lightning cable around the house. That said, wireless charging alleviates a lot of that since MagSafe is so convenient. Really just need the cable for the iPad at that point.

  • Has anyone else tried looking at clover?

It's one of my favorite activities. I know they might not grow everywhere but every time I find a nice patch of white-dwarf clover I love just spending 5 minutes leaning over and looking through it. You can almost always find a 4-leaf one with some patience and a little luck, and it's such a calming task that gets you looking at nature in the middle of your day.
