Flipboard is making a new app for the fediverse
  • It’s a term for insiders. My mother will never talk about “the fediverse.”

The “Open Social Web” is a much better term. It tells you everything you need to know.

  • Flipboard is making a new app for the fediverse
  • This is exactly what we need to get the masses off corporate social media sites.

An app that shows content from across social services has more appeal than being on just bluesky or insta.

  • Corporate Social Media is Junk Food

SocialMedia is part of your daily diet - so why not make it healthy?

Corporate platforms feed you ads, algorithms, and infinite scroll designed to keep you hooked on junk food. The #Fediverse is different:

✅ No ads, no algorithms ✅ Real communities run by real people ✅ Diverse cultures and positive content

Stop feeding on junk. Switch to something organic!

EFF: Top 10 privacy and security resources we think are most useful right now
    mastodon.social Electronic Frontier Foundation (@eff@mastodon.social)

In the wake of the 2024 election in the U.S., many people are concerned about their digital privacy. EFF has decades of experience in providing digital privacy and security resources. Here are the top ten resources that we think are most useful right now 🧵 (1/13)

While this isn’t specific to the Fediverse, our privacy & security features are something that differentiates us compared to corporate owned social media.

Wrapstodon - a new mastodon year end review is here
  • It’s only in the nightly builds, so unless you’re on mastodon.social or a server with the latest build you won’t see it yet.

As for what exactly shows when it’s live, someone posted it was in their notifications.

  • Fundamental problems with privately owned social media platforms
  • Very good points! Ultimately, we’ve got to rid ourselves of corporate social media.

BTW, if you haven’t seen the EFF article on the Fediverse it makes similar arguments.

Lastly, it’s incumbent on all of us to evangelize the fediverse whenever and wherever we can. Most people aren’t aware of the open social web and its myriad benefits.

  • Once it’s implemented in Mastodon, it should make it easier to request the same feature from the Lemmy devs.

Journalists flock to Bluesky as X becomes increasingly 'toxic'
  • Using the term “Open Social Web” instead of fediverse or mastodon seems to help a lot. TechCrunch and other news orgs use the term more nowadays and Meta mentions it as well as the about us on Bluesky.

  • Journalists flock to Bluesky as X becomes increasingly 'toxic'
  • This is the most common reply to any mention of onboarding newcomers, but it’s not helpful. It’d be much more productive to hear specific criticisms so we can address them.

    • Is clicking the big “Join” (the default server) on joinmastodon.org really that big of a hurdle?
    • Is a firehouse home feed required to engage users from the start?
  • Journalists flock to Bluesky as X becomes increasingly 'toxic'
  • Open AI changed to a for profit company in a heartbeat and these folks can too.

More worrying is who owns them and their funding sources.

  • Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Yeah, that’s on me.

Normally I’d post the image and copy over the post body, however, this account is too new to upload images, so I’ve been linking directly to mastodon.

    The rebellion will be federated
  • Absolutely agree. Saying we don’t have the user base or growth of commercial sites is a straw man argument. That’s not the goal. Building solid communities of real people is.

  • The rebellion will be federated
  • This is the way. We can all do our part to build and evangelize the fediverse.

And don’t say things like it’s too complicated or nobody will listen to us. That’s objectively not true.

There are 20 million fediverse users. Stay positive and keep moving forward!
