Oof, I imagine that could’ve gone south - glad you’re still with us. Most scope CRTs tend to use voltages around 2-3kV (Tek scopes usually use 1.8kV accelerators). I’ve even got a scope that uses a specialized CRT that uses a 9kV tube (Tek 317) - definitely something scary to mess around with!
I’ve got half a dozen of similar Tek scopes myself, along with a number of much older scopes from the 60s and a handful of others as well - they’re very pretty. Easy to work on, too, long as you stay careful around HV parts. You definitely should keep it around and consider restoring it as opposed to putting a PC inside of it, cool as that may sound. But either way, I’m glad it found a better home than a dumpster!
I use an older stereo Leica GZ6T I fixed up. Definitely worth it - would recommend picking up a used microscope on eBay though. You can generally get them <$100 or so if you look enough. I don’t have a ton of space either but I really just shove it under my desk when I’m not using the thing.

What you also forgot to mention is just how much trash we generate… that would be a massive limiting factor as well. It’s hard enough to get a few tons of stuff on a rocket going to space. I couldn’t get an exact figure on a quick google search but humanity generates somewhere on the order of tens of thousands of metric tons of trash per day
Right - but try asking “set an alarm in five minutes” - this used to set an alarm (say it’s 10:00, would set a 10:05 alarm). Now it sets a timer, which of course snoozes differently
My friend frequents goodwill and one time, he came home super excited to show me the Husky mini socket set he bought. He excitedly told me “oh it was only $35!”, assuming he had gotten a great deal… that same socket set was also $35 brand new at Home Depot. It’s almost predatory because people just assume goodwill has better prices. That said… my friend should’ve been smart enough to double check that before buying it, lol
