my friend sent me something from nominalnaomi a couple years back and I was like oh cool a new trans youtuber to check out
i watched like one video and it was Not Great and the vibes were fucked
oh, shit. different issue then. i think i just never use the prev button so i didnt notice
ios? if so i think its a known issue upstream
oh it has absolutely gotten worse. but 2012 to 2019 was probably a bigger decline than 2019 to now
no fortinet is used by a bunch of chains/institutions to do their blocking for them. We got on their list so any org that uses fortinet and blocks the "other adult content" category has us blocked
My roommate once convinced me to microwave one...
I don't eat those anymore
the stalin book had a waiting list so I'm reading Liberalism: A Counter-History
it's good, folks. Losurdo is good
Less tempting to get lost in the footnotes though since so much of it is directly citing liberal thinkers being heinous
so if they had done all the same stuff but with manufactured consent instead of just seizing state power, it would have been fine?
I know that's not what they're saying but christ, it sounds like it sometimes.
Further up the feed he's trying to dunk on ralph nader, blaming him for the trump scotus ruling.
superman giving the CIA the full experience is a great concept ngl
my hot take is that windows ppl are like non-vegans: Keep it to yourself and we wont have a problem, but if you start doing anti-FOSS propaganda people are going to be all over that and you shouldn't be surprised
It was not really off topic, to be clear, seeing as mako presented it specifically as "you don't need to install linux you can just remove the bad parts of windows". c/libre and c/technology both are perfectly acceptable places to post about linux (see the sidebar in c/technology), and I don't think we should quarantine linux talk to just c/libre or a new c/linux.
it's "for the left" in that basically nobody is raised a marxist, anarchist, etc, so most arrive at the actual left via first being a liberal and then seeing liberalism fail to accomplish the things it claims to care about. But they bring a lot of ideological baggage with them from liberalism, idpol being a part of that. It takes a decent amount of learning and reflection to overcome that inherited and come to an understanding of liberation and materialism that actually prioritizes those most downtrodden which idpol claims to care about, but in a way that doesn't require you to treat identity as the end-all-be-all.
Although reading it again I think that they mean it is cancerous to the left when it gets in, not that it is a product of or for the left specifically
trying to decide between cleaning my apartment (it needs it), going shopping for groceries/essentials (I need them), and playing Disco Elysium
I basically never play video games so this is actually a tough choice
honestly tho they weren't even "good" by the standards of struggle sessions lol. They would just go on endlessly with new people wandering in and nothing would ever get resolved
yeah this. they'd gain name recognition at the very least.
yeah that's fair, I was being pretty generous to their excuse. I think their approach is misguided for that reason. We have managed to attract some of those people (global south and poc comrades) just by being principled and having a vibrant community, but lemmy.ml it feels like languished without a strong community before the reddit migration and was well, inundated with redditors after the migration. So they may have felt more desperate not to scare off global south comrades (if this is the case though, it clearly led them to making the wrong decision, repeatedly, and putting up with such shitlords probably scares away people you would actually want to have around way more than it could ever really convince the shitlords to change their views)
Its an unenviable spot to be in though for dess/nutomic, trying to run a general use instance, as leftists, without getting defedded by all the libs but also without utterly compromising your principles. Not having a cohesive base community hurts them a lot IMO
til july 21st (I just watched that segment last night)
In principle this seems cool, but having hexbear-like opinions on most other instances is a short trip to getting banned, and even on hexbear with our limited federation sphere I leave my front page on Local at least 99% of the time because when I change it to All I either see very few non-local posts or run across stuff so dumb I feel pain for having witnessed it (or spammy low quality junk). Some of the FOSS comms I should probably follow but realistically it would just result in me getting nerd sniped constantly by other people's problems
Fun fact we also have a custom improved Active sorting algorithm on hexbear, can't get that anywhere else. Makes Active usable without it getting so stale and without it optimizing for days-long shit-flinging struggle sessions like the default active algo does
maybe aim for hanoi yeah... I had no idea HCMC was sinking...
lets just say I still would have more faith in vietnam handling sea level rise than say, florida, and I don't think northern vietnam is at risk of wet bulb temps any time too soon, but it would still be hot and humid for a westerner
Somewhat reddit-brained lib friend of mine sent this article which triggered a whole discussion of geopolitics: https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/tsmcs-euv-machines-are-equipped-with-a-remote-self-destruct-in-case-of-an-invasion
He said that would reduce the chance of an invasion and I was like (paraphrasing): "really? does it? the generations-long and unfinished business of the chinese civil war and all the history there is outweighed by the thought of losing one chip fab that they've already proven they don't really need after all the sanctions? They aren't going to invade unless their hand is forced, there's literally already US troops on taiwan-held islands, if they were on the brink of invading they would have done it already, but they aren't."
He basically argued that the majority of people there wanted to be independent therefore its simple self determination and the US should help them, etc.
I said the no capitalist state gives a flying fuck about self determination and asked if texas has the right to secede, or perhaps more relevantly, if texas settlers had the right to secede from mexico and join the US in the first place? because its not like the nationalists that took over the island were its native inhabitants, who are now mostly dead, flooding a low-population place with "settlers" doesn't mean you own it...
we went back and forth a bunch and he stopped arguing when I pointed out the inconsistency of supporting palestine but also taiwan, when they (while not the same, taiwan wasn't settler colonialism) have kind of a similar arc, what with israel's "majority", both having invaded and largely displacing the prior inhabitants.
I don't feel I had all the best arguments at my disposal, though overall I feel good about my responses.
