Will A.I. Ruin the Planet or Save the Planet? It’s a notorious energy hog. But artificial intelligence can also foster innovation and discovery, & it could speed the global transition to cleaner power
  • Lol. Neural networks are useful for signal processing, that's so bold an innovative that nobody thought of it until 1943 when the first neural network was designed. That's not to downplay the efforts of the people who made this happen but this article is acting like these massively useful ML applications like signal processing wouldn't be possible without the generative AI for consumers and businesses that is responsible for these absurd power requirements and huge data centers, and that's just patently false.

  • The Whitewashing and Greenwashing of Gov. Tim Walz
  • Goddamn the "any critique of a democrat means you're a trump supporting russian bot" crowd really is out in force here. Majorly supporting Keystone XL, supporting the violent police response to the George Floys protests, and supporting the genocidal regime of Israel are all reprehensible things and it is a joke that they're trying to paint this man as a progressive.

Switching back to Windows. For now.
  • Your OS being the cause of massive problems running common programs should not be something you have to have the skills to fix in the first place. And distro issue? How the hell are you even supposed to pick a distro when if you ask 10 linux users what distro you should use you'll get 11 different answers? Sure, you could just try them all, but it takes a long time to evaluate an OS, plus just making sure that all the programs you want to run don't just shit themselves.

  • A cool guide to Epicurean paradox
  • Alright so your argument about free will only really adds up if you are an absolutist about free will. Imagine a perfect utopian paradise of a world. All are free to do whatever they want so long as it is not "evil." Your definition of evil can vary but presumably an omniscient god would have a pretty good idea of what that means. Rhe mwans of prevention xouls be literally anything, because y'know omnipotent and omniscient, including just creating people that simply do not have the capacity for evil. Would the people in that world not have free will? Just because there are some things they cannot do does not mean that in my eye. I can't fly or bite my own finger off or perceive and manipulate the fabric of the universe, does that mean I don't have free will? IMO the only way your position here is logically consistant is if you do take the absolutist position that in order to have free will you must be omnipotent yourself, otherwise there will always be things you cannot do.

  • Is Sekiro too hard? Wanna try but I’m afraid of my deflects. People say combat is f good. DS Veteran here.
  • My experience as someone who bounced off a couple souls games, playwd Sekiro, and then played Elden Ring: Sekiro is not harder, and IMO most people who say it is come from a place of having gotten used to more traditional soulsborne combat. If you're struggling in Sekiro my main tips are to go somewhere else for a while, or just that you can straight up ignore most enemies in the game without consequences.

  • Kamala Harris says ‘I will not be silent’ on suffering in Gaza after Netanyahu talks
  • I'm not the OP of that comment nor did I express any opinion on the matter but fuck it let's do this. Your position is, if I understand it correctly, that people who think that a politician, a group of people famous for making empty promises and gestures especially when running for office, might be making empty promises and should not be lauded for what may just be paying lip service to a hot-button issue, are "parroting nonsense" and "basically an AI" to you. I understand that there are constant proven efforts to attempt to convince democratic voters not to vote, but I think that freaking out over any critique of the democratic candidate is frankly unhealthy for both this platform and for democracy at large. I know the stakes for this election, I was going to vote for Biden and I am going to vote for Harris, but just because we live under a fucked up two-party system and we have to fall in line when it comes to voting doesn't mean we have to fall in line for the dogma as well.

  • Israel ready for ‘all-out war’ in Lebanon
  • I mean this is purely conjecture but I would be very surprised if the US military did not in fact have huge stockpiles of ammunition that they are simply not willing to give to ukraine explicitly so they can be ready for an actual US deployment

  • Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our unshittified experience
  • Y'all I fucking hate windows but running linux went fine until I had to do some video editing for classwork. Premiere pro, which I had a student license for, obviously out. I go looking for FOSS alternatives because hey i'm sure there's a good linux video editor. I think I ended up settling on Kdenlive. I tried installing it from the ubuntu app store and that version was missing features. I tried installing it with apt-get and then proceeded to spend the next 5 hours trying to fix a missing dependancy that seemed to have just vanished off the face of fhe earth. I'm sure there are workarounds but "able to look through the error logs of the apt-get and track down the problem" apparently wasn't tech-savvy enough to have a video editor, one of the most important types of professional software IMO. (also i spent so much money on games cause proton doesn't play nice with piracy very often). I think lonux is perfect for thw really basic user or for the hyper advanced superuser types, but when you're in the middle it can be a real bitch to work with.

  • Become one with nature
  • alright we doin this okay so most small-time beekepers at least (can't speak for the larger industrial ones) only rarely resort to providing sugar as a substitute for honey because bees massively overprodice it. Also, the lack of micronutrients is not supported by any literature I can find, and additionally sugar substitution should only occur during the winter regardless. Finally: if bees are being exploited they will just leave. Everything I've found indicates that under poor conditions the entire hive will swarm and just go somewhere else. I do think the point about impacting biodiversity is valid, but if that were a decider for whether a food source is vegan there would be a whole lot fewer crops on that list.
