Because occasionally one must tolerate things that are not in our circle of enjoyment? Friends, companions, acquaintances, coworkers or whatever reason they happen to be in your social circle…
I have a couple friends that i get along with perfectly other than the fact that they are Swifties. Im not going to not be friends with them despite how often they talk about the tortured poets lament or whatever the fuck its called.
The issue with pop culture is that it is directly related to consumerism. Music used to be fun, easily accessible and very experimental. Whatever the fuck happened post-20th century has stifled the growth of culture - too bad they failed to stiffle drawing and related art-form, but when we are talking about dance, music or movie, everything is whack.
Every music out there is crappy, whitewashed hiphop derivative, taking a piss on the older culture, stealing works of artists who identify themselves under indie, experimental scenes. What's worse is that these music have destroyed the classical folk music outside of America.
so much of our culture is now based on media consumption, it's hard to avoid. too expensive to do anything but sit at home and watch TV
I guess movies etc can be a segue into talking about other topics. so if they talk about Furiosa you can bum them out by talking about the real climate apocalypse
Change the topic to older movies. Get recommendations. Pirate the recommended movies and watch them. Now you can talk about the older movies.
I have befriended several coworkers this way. People fucking love it when other people listen to their recommendations. And hey, sometimes the recommendations are good!
i used to be addicted to pop culture and to an extent probably still am
no one got through to me by curbing my pop culture addiction. i needed the gnawing, numb emptiness inside of me to grow beyond the joy a rebooted IP gave me. only then did i start caring about actually important shit
There isn't much in the way of positive projects to get involved with that aren't 1) very personally dangerous or 2) hard to physically be involved with (for various reasons) or 3) by some group that is dodgy.
I feel like addicts still somewhat care about other things than their addiction, or at least want to. The ignorance aspect is like some new thing that I don’t understand
