His point is that the quality of instruction is not that much different, which is true vs. a state school (usually the cheapest option). It definitely doesn't scale linearly with cost, much like luxury vehicles. Most of the cost gets wrapped up in being a status symbol.
A decent education costs $30-70k depending on variables. Sometimes less.
Basically he's saying "Sorry Poor's, you don't get to follow your dreams."
Exactly! That sort of logic is also applied to anyone who gets a non-moneymaking degree. "Oh you got your degree in [anything other then STEM™️ or Business] good luck getting a job loser", is a narrative that runs so damn rampant in our culture. It sucks so much. Katz should be able to get their degree/certification/whatever without being sent to debtor's prison.
You can get a STEM degree from a state school, or a private institution. Often the private institution is more prestigious, (e.g. Harvard, MIT) but there are plenty of state schools with good reps (Cal Poly).
the relative value of an elite school undergrad vs a regular/normal state school undergrad is the professional network and brand.
sometimes people with elite school credentials confuse this with an actual higher quality education, which is understandable because as far as I've seen among elite school alumni, for 4 years all they were "taught" was that they were receiving a higher quality education than others.
The main point of this is not necessarily because those colleges are super high-quality (although they can be), but the brand shows that you come from wealth thanks to the countryclubification of both colleges and the workplace.
You’d be surprised by the amount of student debt. I personally know regular normal people who have approximately 100K for an undergraduate degree. Worse yet some of them didn’t even get the degree. It’s crazy how easily one can go into debt. I’m not even talking “ financial literacy” or whatever I’m just saying it’s way too easy for people to be ensnared for life by the doing the thing they are “supposed” to do
I'm a grown ass adult with a corporate job and banks would still raise an eyebrow at loaning me $100K. There's no reason an 18 year old should sign off on that.
Yeah, they shouldn't be able to sign for that sort of money, nor should universities be asking that much. It's crazy how much tuition costs and cost-of-living have just utterly gone to the moon. It's crazy dude. I went to some regular public university, and I got 55K around my neck. It sucks so much.
Salute to the parents and families that allow. I know the cultural narrative is you're supposed to go and face the world and blahblahblah but living with parents while you go to school should also be a considered as cool and good.
