Honestly the fact that it was based on D&D had very little to do with what made BG3 great for me. I switched to Pathfinder 2e in January of last year, and playing through BG3, I was frequently thinking about how awful the 5e system was for that sort of game compared to the Pathfinder 2e system. Especially when it comes to character creation. So many of the feats from the core rules are utter trash, so many of the class features are completely useless, to the point that they needed to significantly buff many mechanics just to make some of the choices not be completely worthless.
Wrath of the Righteous is such a crazy good game. I started BG3 when I was halfway through RotR and I was so confused because I thought I was skipping parts of the character gen. It took me awhile to realize there just isn't that much to choose from for classes.
Totally, feats every 4 levels, way fewer feats, and 12 level cap, it’s really so much smaller than WotR. I still enjoyed the combat though, as it’s more refined than WotR (less buggy doors).
Oh yeah it's a blast to play. I'm not saying either one is better than the other. They both excel at thier strengths.
The 5e rules system is why I've been unable to finish the game, I just can't get past it.
