Louisiana GOP Gov. Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency due to a police officer shortage
Louisiana GOP Gov. Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency due to a police officer shortage.
Landry's executive order issued Thursday lifts limits on how many new employees Louisiana sheriffs can hire and on payroll increases for their departments.
Landry, who previously had a career in law enforcement, said that police departments in the state are experiencing record-low employments “resulting in increased crime and less public safety.” As of July, sheriff's offices statewide were down 1,800 deputies, Landry said.
It would be great if police held themselves to a standard that helped the public, then we could have someone trustworthy to report to. As it is, they have destroyed the trust they had with me by failing to do even the most minor things to address problematic cops. It is clear the "problematic" cops for me are the kind of cops they actually want.
No thank you.
It's on the police to rebuild trust with us now, they've shown repeatedly they deserve none.
Edit: in Louisiana I would not be surprised that having fewer cops would reduce crime. This is a state that has repeatedly fought to keep racism alive and well. I bet there are huge issues there with the police terrorizing vs. serving many communities. So .. less cops on the ground sounds like more peace for a lot of people who've been suppressed way too much, seems like a win.
Don't like my opinion? Wake me up when the cops say "yeah, we fucked up and lost your trust for being gun happy cowards, we have changed the rules and we must protect and serve and any killing on our part is reviewed independently every time."
It's already well-known that data collected and reported by police departments is pretty horrid. Tons of data that SHOULD be kept and reported isn't, and tons of policing agencies don't want real stats getting out. Justice-related data has always been iffy.
So what I'm saying is we shouldn't even trust too much what we do currently know. They're not that solid of data for most justice related datasets.
I think where you miss stepped was when you said "no one to report crimes to" but people will still report the same number of crimes voluntarily to a fewer number of police. Instead it would be accurate to say fewer crimes are reported by police.
That's not really accurate. They still have log of calls/reports. Just not someone to deal with the problem. Dispatch just gives up if there aren't enough officers?
Is this just political theater or is this guy planning to recruit brownshirts into the police force?
This is somehow reminiscent of how the nazis came to power, including the milktoast reporting by mainstream media. If they continue to inject their brand of fascists into the system they'll slowly gain more and more power and win.
This is somehow reminiscent of how the nazis came to power,
Yep we are in the middle of a full on fascist surge, and the reprehensibles are gathering their troops. It's going to get really bad soon and no one seems interested in actually addressing this.
Yeah. Antifa. They've been fighting fascists since 1920s and part of their rationale for autonomous action is that the state is just notoriously bad at opposing fascism. That's why they protest against right wing fascist gateway speakers on campuses, because fascist speech / well crafted lies is fascist recruitment. Unfortunately well meaning "liberals" like e.g. Bill Maher then always come out of the woodwork and say bla bla free speech lol.
There is also liberal fascism that uses legal means but that's already pretty active in the US.
Sorry if I'm telling you something you already know :) But liberals like Bill Maher
They could also be manufacturing the crisis and then taking advantage of this. Like mobbing the good cops to leave and then to be able to say "crisis!" and recruit more fascist cops.
Ahhh I'm just kidding there are no god cops and these guys aren't that smart ;)
Maybe they should look at reducing crime from the start, instead of just attacking it after its already underway. Better schooling and other social programs, maybe? Give people people enough prosperity so that they'll have something they want to protect, instead of having nothing to lose.
You are suggesting things far beyond the capacity of anyone in Louisiana's government. Republicunts are always reactionaries and don't even consider problems until they are in their face and then they choose to attack the symptom and not the disease.
Happy, healthy, educated people not scrapping for money don't rob the gas station nearly as often. Supporting those issues decreases crime directly and would make for a scenario where less officers are needed.
I’m originally from Louisiana but have been away for awhile. I know that this is a problem in New Orleans, which we still visit on a regular basis, and while it was bad when I lived there, I read local news and hear from friends that it’s even worse now.
The rest of the state - outside of a few random areas here and there, depending on trends that just affect these sorts of things regardless - I would be surprised if this is a real “crisis” everywhere else vs Landry (who is a major POS btw) just wanting to lock more people up in the private prisons that allegedly may help to fund his political ambitions.
Landry is a garbage person who looooooves “law & order”, is a Trump sycophant, and who will allegedly make decisions based on what will “own the libs” the most. He’s trash. I cannot explain how awful this person is.
Even if you want to be the one good cop and arrest the bad ones, you cannot. It's illegal to be a good person and a cop both, so no good person would want to be a cop.
Though not as high risk as being a logger, a fishing worker, a pilot, a roofer, a general construction worker, any job driving a car or semi, any agricultural laborer, and certain types of maintenance work, among a few others.*
The shortage is real despite how he's trying to play political theater with it.
Washed up cops like to set up shop in Louisiana thinking no one will see their backgrounds and then get fired once their terrible demeanor is exposed. Some Police Chiefs are also corrupt so it's hard for them to keep the good workers.
And all of that is before some of them get arrested for crimes themselves. It's a shit show.
