Wish the neighbours were a bit more subdued. Don't know for sure where they got their fireworks from, but suspect they may have come straight from Satan's asshole. Me and my wife are definitely part of the exhausted cohort of New Zealanders, so could've used the extra sleep.
I hate fireworks. I don't mind a professional fireworks display because not only is it pleasant to look at, it also comes to an end.
The morons setting them off for what seems like hours, is the shit that gets to me. We have Ruru in the reserve at the end of our street and following every fucking Guy Fawkes, diwali, Christmas, new year's, and any other time the inconsiderate fuckwits set off fireworks, I don't hear the Rurus for weeks. Nevermind the other birds, dogs, etc.
Inconsiderate bastards is what they are.

Not even the whole getting drunk thing - I've got 3 kids so that's been out for years. Just a general atmosphere of meh - not seeing many celebrations at homes or anything.
Possibly, yes. It's been a tough year for everyone I know, and a lot of people are just trying to get through the break without spending too much money.
I think the stress and uncertainty of the last few years has left us with no real optimism. There's usually a lot more talk of New Year New Start and resolutions about getting your life generally better but now it feels like it's just dragging yourself past a check-in point on a fairly mundane racetrack.
This year I'm definitely going to try and focus on good things in my journal to see if I can improve my outlook.

Idk if it's just because I have completely removed myself from the news cycle, but I haven't heard anything about NYE this year, not even from friends and family on Facebook. I think everyone is just like "meh".
I've seen zero social media posts mention new years as well, come to think of it. Nobody seems to care any more.
I've had subdued new years' for years now, and prefer it. Maybe you're just getting (or feeling) older?
