What's the difference between a possum and an opossum?

Most sources I've read state that Opossum refers exclusively to North American Opossums and Possum is exclusively Australian Possums.
However, this one article on Meriam-Webster.com claims that the two spellings are interchangeable
It's to make them sound irish or some shit I read it in the news
