How reliable are nas actually?

I have a 8 year old wdmycloud. The board died. I managed to salvage the working drive. So in theory the nas unit failed before the drive failed? Now for replacement, i have a choice of a brand new ds223j or a 2nd hand 4 year old ds218+ both for the same price. With my past experience of a dead board which should i consider?
