Another journalist tragically shot himself in the back of the head twice, locked the gun in the boot of the car and walked 20 yards into the field and died.
In some countries like Saudi Arabia, Russia being investigative journalist indeed dangerous profession, and many died. But sure, let’s blame the CIA instead.

I'd like to hold my own alleged democratic republic to higher standards than a totalitarian theocratic petrostate.

Classic whataboutism
Whataboutism is when similar things are done by somebody else. Here it is orders of magnitude difference.
