Saturday Anime Night, 8PM EST: Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990) eps. 37 through 39 and The Motion Picture (1991), and idol-singer action-fantasy KPop Demon Hunters (2025)! (CWs inside)

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we are finishing the classic Gainax series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990), covering the final episodes, 37 through 39. Join a rag-tag group of unlikely heroes on a steampunk adventure to find and save the lost city of Atlantis from an diabolical organization determined to rule the world. Stargate (1994) and Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) pretty much ripped this series off. Oh yeah, and did I mention that Hayao Miyazaki wrote it, and Hideaki Anno was involved, too?

After that is Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water: The Motion Picture (1991), the theatrical follow-up to the TV series, with neither Hideaki Anno nor Hayao Miyazaki being involved. Is it good anyway? I guess we’ll find out.

Last is KPop Demon Hunters (2011), an English-language CG-animated action feature about a trio of K-pop idols who take up demon hunting to protect their fans. They have to protect their secret identities while also fulfilling their obligations as world-travelling musical superstars. Chicks are gonna rock. Director Chris Appelhans previously did the Aladdin ripoff Wish Dragon (2021), which we have not watched. Good reviews for this, so let’s give it a shot.
