How is this still happening? Like, the first time it happened, it should have been talked about in their professional circles so much that everyone understood. Maybe a few stragglers who took a break from news and society for mental health reasons when they first come back. But it’s been like two years.

There are always lazy people in every profession. If not for Chatgpt, there would be lawyers getting in trouble for plagiarism and messing up their work, but that doesn't make the news. Additionally there are the people that have been using it for a while and just got sloppy enough to get caught
What's even worse is there are LLM's specific to the legal industry that would serve better for this attorney's purposes, if they weren't too lazy to review the output at least. They could have also asked the LLM to simply insert placeholders to references for them instead of creating them out of thin air, which would have given them the opportunity to put in legit info.
