May 2025: Can I modify respirators?
Lots of drama on respirator modification for some reason, so I've created a quick little guide that should iron out all concerns. Are you:
- ...in an environment defined as hazardous by OSHA?
- ...in a environment where you feel you might need to sue someday, like a reckless hospital?
- ...reselling or redistributing respirators?
No. Do not modify respirators. However, if you are:
- ...in a "voluntary use" environment, where respirators are not required per se.
- ...cannot wear a mask any other way (while abstaining from hazardous environments)
- ...doing fit testing. (Surprise!)
Then modifications are okay. Just make sure to dispose of your respirator afterwards. It shouldn't have to be said, but don't be gross and redistribute your used respirator.
This is not legal advice. God forbid, if you are a business reading CPCSupport, please read the Code of Federal Regulations.
