Notice how he doesn't place any blame in his statement? He doesn't mention Israel at all. He speaks about Gaza like it's a natural disaster. It's vague anti-war populism.
"I am deepenly saddened by what is happening in the Gaza strip". Why doesn't he say that Israel is doing a genocide?
"Let the fire cease immediately." Israel and US have blocked a ceasefire since October 2023.
"Let humanitarian aid be provided to the exhausted civilian population." Israel has blocked all aid to Gaza since March 2.
"And may all hostages be freed." Zionist talking point. The hostages are the only bargaining chip that the Palestinians have for a cease fire.
Compare this to what he says about Ukraine.
"I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people." Why didn't he mention that people live in Gaza? He says that he cares about Ukrainian people. Doesn't mention the existence of Palestinian people.
- He treats Gaza like a natural disaster, meanwhile a contingent of .world users are singing his praises for calling Russia's invasion of Ukraine Imperialist.

  I noticed that this is a policy change from Pope Francis. Pope Francis had said that the Ukraine war was provoked by NATO expansion and he urged Ukraine to negotiate a ceasefire with Russia. Pope Francis said that Ukraine should have "the courage of the white flag".
  Pope Leo is seemingly blaming the war on Russia. I saw redditors claiming that Pope Leo had called Russia "imperialist". I think Pope Leo may be a NATO Pope.

Yeah sorry, this isn't any different to the standard 'anti-war' Western liberal who wants a ceasefire but refuses to do anything about the actual problem (Israel).

i'd say this constitutes probably a bit of a walk back from francis' commitments to palestine, but let's hope not. francis was calling a priest in occupied palestine like daily i want to say. a good way for leo to show that he intends to keep a similar tempo would be visibly following through on francis' wish to convert the popemobile in palestine into a mobile health clinic
- I think Francis being the first Pope to come from a Global South country (especially one that was once under a far-right military dictatorship) really opened his eyes and made him sympathetic to the suffering of the international proletariat, at least more than his predecessors who were all White Euros. Leo did spend a lot of time in Peru but is still ultimately a Yankee, so I don't expect much from him.
