Even if you would think that were a good thing - which I don’t - there is no business case justifying spending all this money on border controls, impacting travel, increasing congestion and pollution just to ’catch’ 19(!) “illegal” immigrants. Even the numbers don’t add up.
Also: Nobody is illegal!
It's sad that people looking for better life are illegal
It's absolutely not illegal to look for a better life in another country. What IS illegal is crossing the border without using the proper immigration procedure.
Seeking refuge is different from immigration... the right for asylum is there to give you the opportunity to escape a dangerous place and stay TEMPORARILY in another country
Nobody is illegal
I hate this so much...
The thing is: YOU might not be "illegal", but entering your neighbors house without his consent indeed is illegal.
What would you do if a random number of strangers would tomorrow at noon decide that it would be a great idea to just enter your house?
There is a huge difference between your house and a country.
The right to asylum was put into the constitution because many victims of the holocaust where denied entry to other counties before getting rounded up and killed.
If a stranger is running down the street, chased by a guy with a blood soaked knife, would you let them in?

ITT: someone who understands fuck all of what makes the world run.
Immigration isn’t the issue; xenophobia is.
The issue is that colonialism has depleted the resources of many countries and destabilized them, thus making them unsafe for many today Of course people will try to stay alive by fleeing those conditions. And it's outrageous to turn them away. Us westerners have it good BECAUSE they have it bad. Doesn't matter that nobody alive today is responsible for colonialism.
Immigration is an issue too.
Immigration drives up rents in cities while at the same time giving the economy cheap labour and keeping wages down.
As long as immigrants are not guaranteed the same wages as citizens and are not distributed across the country, including the country-side, immigration is a net negative. The only ones profiting are employers and retirees.
I will not accept this injustice as long as bavarians and swabians are still free to roam germany as they please.
Good point!

a fricking tragedy, and sadly one we all already saw coming when Merz was buddy-buddy with AfD on this very topic.
i fucking hate this timeline.
This legitimizes the argument to those "promoting" and benefiting from making immigration a central political issue. Not smart.
I fear we already crossed that line some time ago when the established parties used immigration as the scapegoat for pretty much everything that supposedly goes wrong in the country. Now it's really hard to go back.
Disappointing but not surprising.
Bild reported that over two days, authorities also detained 14 smugglers, carried out 48 open arrest warrants, and apprehended nine individuals under extremism laws targeting hard-left, far-right, and Islamist ideologies, among others.
Holy shit. Two days. Imagine how many more criminals and terrorists they're going to find if they retain this policy. Previously these people just came and went as they pleased.
And how many potential retirement fund payers got turned away? How many nurses to wipe your ass once you're old?
Of course you're going to find more people with an arrest warrant on them if you check every single person. That's a no-brainer. But what are you paying for that?
It doesn’t look like any were turned away, but please correct me if you have another source. In this case it’s hard to imagine those smugglers and terrorists were about to turn their lives around and begin taking care of elderly people.
Is this really coming to Lemmy now? Jesus, wtf
Well done, Germany.
