Name Ideas

Keep CoMaps.
I like this name: it's cute, short and memorable. I also like that 'co-' can have multiple meanings (cooperation, coexisting, community, carbon monoxyde).
- A quick search for comaps shows a couple different projects already using that name. comaps.de is some kind of map visualization. Using the comaps name could lead to some confusion.
  
  When you search for "Gentoo", you sometimes get results for a real estate company with the same name. Name collisions are nothing to fear about, unless the name is a registeted trademark in multiple countries.

Folk Maps
- I like folk maps, really gives the correct community/citizen cartography vibe

- A play on organic meaning carbon-based (as in organic chemistry). Also I feel like it should be easy(ish) for speakers of other languages to pronounce. I may be wrong though!

- Alternate spelling of Leaf Maps as well (since most people will mis-hear and type the English word rather than the name) and maybe a leafy Lief is the mascot ;)

  There might be too many projects named "Delta ___". (...I'm guessing. I can really only think of Delta Chat.)

  Admittedly I only did a 30 second search and got the aforementioned Japanese company and something to do with the UK government. I thought it was probably too good to be true.
- Edited the original comment to comply with the rules. Cut 'n' paste of reasoning:
  It's the Latin word for map, at least according to Google, and there doesn't appear to be any similar entities using the name, just a Japanese animation studio.
  It also rolls nicely off the tongue. "Have you checked on Mappa?"

I think we can choose the name of a famous cartographer whose name is easy to pronounce in any language.
And then,

- Under the 15th century heading, "Piri", the cartographer who prepared the top map among the sample maps shown there, would be a good name.
  Or maybe, "Orbis" and "Battista" under the 16th century heading.
  So Piri Maps, Orbis Maps, Battista Maps, etc.
  
  battista is long and would often be spelled wrong. Piri and Orbis are fine, but Orbis sounds better and starts with an O XD
  Note that there is a university library software called orbis, but well you cant avoid that
  
  Orbis makes me think of something sciency like the earth is in orbit or an orb. I like that
- Males me think of Jacques Cartier whose surname sounds like Cartes (French for map).

  Organic Maps was born as a fork of MapsMe, because the owner/developer went closed source. And the same thing is happening again, forking the same thing for a similar reason again...

In Vivo Maps
- The one that lives within or is in the living. It's alive in all of us (the community) and the other way around: our contributions live within the app and OSM. Also, its supposed to be the fork that lives on. I think this would be a subtle nudge without carrying a scarred name like phoenix/revival with the project forever.

Plaid Maps
- Reasoning:
  Plaid patterns kinda look like a city street grid.
  Plaid clothing/flannels is often worn by and associated with people who would buy organic, or are 'earthy' (see: Vermont Flannel)
  This interesting thread.
  Potential cons:
  Could be confused with the Plaid Bank Linking App.

  I like this a lot. My only fear is that Fintech suing the project. Not that it would have merit - completely different industries, after all - but just proving that could kill the project or force another name change.

I feel like it should be something that rolls off the tongue. Something easy to search and not awkward to recommend irl. Sucks because Organic Maps was pretty good in both those cases
- OpenStreetMap is the registered trademark of OSM Foundation, and they ask to please don't use mixed and confusing names like this for related projects. From the Trademark Policy:
  You may not:
  abbreviate the wordmarks, combine them with other words (“OpenStreetMapThing”), or substitute words in the mark (“OpenStreetThing” or “OpenThingMap”), especially where the new combination sounds similar to OpenStreetMap.
  While they usually allow the use for open projects, it would be just easier to respect the request of the Foundation.
- Some of these are existing, can you split out your favorites into top-level comments and upvote those that already exist?
