I wish both Starlink and Bell a very big go fuck yourselves and I hope both of you go bankrupt.
i wish them both (and every other big canadian telecom) a very sincere Get Nationalized Fucker
I love my offbranded Bell subsidiary substitute! It gives me the illusion of choice so I can feel like I am not funding Bell while still using the internet.
In all seriousness, where are we on other options? PublicMobile got bought out by Telus. Any non big telecom options for phone and internet?
I have TekSavvy internet (unless you're in their small fiber network, yes you're still using Bell/Rogers/Cogeco/Telus local lines) and my cell phone is with Fizz (flanker brand of VideoTron, which also owns Freedom, which is all owned by Quebecor).
There are a few, but they're rare. I also have no idea if they're any good.

Move to Saskatchewan, sure you can see the middle of no where from here but you have real telecommunication competition with Sasktel.
Bell is just as terrible as Starlink .... at least they don't have an idiot CEO mascot parading around to the world how stupid their company is
And they're not ruining the night sky and radio astronomy.
I hate Bell but I hate Musk more. Let them fight.
I never thought a day would come when I would agree with Bell. 😆
Get rid of that space junk.
Over half the total sattelites in orbit are Starlink. This has to stop now before we loose access to space.
While I can appreciate that, starlink is going to keep launching them even if we don't use it in Canada. Saying cut starlink out is fine and all but there are lots of places and communities without any decent broadband options at all (in Canada and beyond).
If your in an area getting decent cable or fiber as an option then your comments really don't require any level of sacrifice from you.
Would you commit to the comment to prevent starlink from additional satellites if it meant a general tax increase for everyone resulting in you personally paying an extra of $200/year to accomodate fiber buildout and maintenance?

You may be unaware, but Telstat will have their LEO constellation and subsequent high speed satellite internet up and running by 2027. A Canadian solution to a Canadian problem.
There another sattelitte ISPs. Infact, One is working on creating a space celluar network.
Yes I would.
But not giving them money will limit how many they launch.
How would we lose access? Starlink is very low earth orbit... drag will deorbit all of the sats sooner or later unless they are serviced.
til the canadian government funds starlink..... why?
Funding might be a misleading word here. The title is technically correct, but within context.
Government has funding for increasing internet connectivity in remote areas. Some of that funding is spent on Starlink contracts. So the ask is more like to stop considering Starlink for contracts that consume government funding.
This is excluding the 100 million contract the Ontario government has with Starlink, which Ford (the premier) has said was going to cancel upon the initial announcement of tariffs, then withdrew when the tariffs didn't happen, but then never mentioned ever again despite tariff after tariff being applied to Canada, and especially Ontario considering that this province is the one hit hardest by both the metals and auto tariffs over any other province as far as I know.
Basically Ontario is hit the hardest by the actually applied tariffs, and yet our premier is giving public enemy #2 100 million in taxpayer dollars for a service that can mostly be fulfilled by local companies already.
I believe it is for an initiative to improve connectivity in rural and remote areas.
i have never been so confused about my position on a topic. ever.
You can still hate them both.
Bell. Let's Talk.
retches
A broken clock's right twice a day. F- Robellus, but f- Felon Moskva more.
It's incredible that people are willing to throw away excellent technology over emotions. This his been a problem throughout human history. When you look at the bigger picture, why would anyone want to be a part of that cycle?
I don't think that this is the case of "throw(ing) away excellent technology over emotions". This is the case of the owner of Starlink actively working with the American administration against the national interests & sovereignty of Canadians. We should be long, long past squabbling over borders, especially with nations that have been our close allies for over a hundred years, who have suddenly decided that annexation is a desirable objective. This has nothing to do with "emotions" and everything to do with sovereignty.
because of emotions? we have seen Starlink being used to threaten/force Ukraine to comply now that they’re reliant on it for their military. We do not want to allow anything similar to happen here
People are usually afraid of something they don't understand. You're so hyper focused on a few political issues that you are not seeing the enormous benefits this and other technology can have for all of humanity.
Who cares about the owner and how he's making money. Everyone dies, he will be dead eventually. Technology lives on. Don't be regressive.
Littering LEO with space junk just so you can see the booba faster out in the sticks is not the forward thinking stance you want to believe it is.
Killing terrestrial astronony while, and potentially ending spaceflight, because we're too lazy to propey invest in terrestrial solutions and just want the billionaire wankers to control everyting is a self own.
