Far more than half of the world population of humans would die if all the birds go up, and technological civilization would most likely simply be over because the infrastructure needed to do energy extraction would have been destroyed. North America and Eurasia would be pretty much wiped out between strikes and fallout/climate shifting, and the global south would be devastated by climactic changes.
Whether it’d be a reset to a permanent pre-industrial Graeber style communism or it’d be a population bottleneck that results in human extinction, it certainly would not be just people moving on with their lives.
Nuclear war now would probably kill hundreds of millions. 80s would be absolutely apocalyptic. Not so sure about 1957, but half the human population might be right.
