Far more than half of the world population of humans would die if all the birds go up, and technological civilization would most likely simply be over because the infrastructure needed to do energy extraction would have been destroyed. North America and Eurasia would be pretty much wiped out between strikes and fallout/climate shifting, and the global south would be devastated by climactic changes.
Whether it’d be a reset to a permanent pre-industrial Graeber style communism or it’d be a population bottleneck that results in human extinction, it certainly would not be just people moving on with their lives.
Sad to know that the nuclear weapons Mao was aware of were astronomically weaker and less numerous than the ones harbored today.
I don't know whether Italians would survive tho.
Hmm I'm not so sure. If you look at this historical stockpile chart: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_nuclear_weapons_stockpiles_and_nuclear_tests_by_country it's possible the arsenal was bigger in 1957 than today. Also, by this point the US was fielding nukes with yields greater than 10 megatons. Such large yields aren't used anymore except by China IIRC.
Nuclear war now would probably kill hundreds of millions. 80s would be absolutely apocalyptic. Not so sure about 1957, but half the human population might be right.
