The new normal

I'll make the mandatory "Hi, I came here from Reddit" post that I'm guessing is mandatory on lemmy for threads dunking on the site? Might as well be my first post in the fediverse too to get that out of the way. Wish I had known about lemmy sooner tbh but better late than never.
Also if someone has the spare time for it, I'd love to get pointed towards whatever's commonly used for onboarding here. If there stuff I should be aware of and tools I should look into, what phone apps people use, that sorta stuff. I picked my host because I wanted something european but I'm now kinda eyeing the old layout option that world seems to have since I used to use the old layout on reddit too.
EDIT: Wow, thank you for all the recommendations. Definitely gotta take a look at all the various apps that people are using to find one that works for me!
- You came at the right time. When I left during the API nightmare and removal of third party apps, Lemmy was like walking into a desert wasteland and praying it loaded up and you weren’t just standing there in the void.
  When it did load, where sand should be in the wasteland, it was beans. Slimy, canned beans as far as the eye could see.
  You’ve entered during the golden age if you ask me. I don’t even think about Reddit anymore.

- I use Voyager for Lemmy on Android (it looks like Reddit-is-Fun), but unlike Reddit, Lemmy has no API restrictions, so you can use whatever you want, to get the design/layout that works for you best.

  Yup, using Boost which used to be my go to app for Reddit on Android.

- I'm a big fan of Sync app. It was formerly a Reddit app. It doesn't get much updates but it's fully functional for my needs.
  
  If you are on Android, try Summit or Connect, they are both even better than Sync.
- Voyager is basically a spiritual successor to Apollo. So if you miss that from the API purge, then give it a try.

- Connect for lemmy is a RIF-esque ui that I enjoy.
  
  Seconded for Connect - I started using it after the API induced exodus and haven't looked back since. I have no idea how it compares to other apps, but I have no complaints!

- For a phone app, I use boost. There are ads, but they are FAR less intrusive than most mainstream apps.
  
  And you can get rid of them for a reasonabley low one time payment. I can't even remember how much it was, I think in the ballpark of 10 €.

- Man.. I even remember being on watchpeopledie and that sub scarred me for life, to think we now get banned for upvoting sentences containing Luigi is insane.. Reddit has changed so much, can't even be mad at nazi's cause they're afraid it'll hurt Elon's little feelings..

- I haven't used Reddit for years but I get a lot more timeouts and comment removals here than I ever did over there.
  
  To be fair, they really ramped it up on Reddit, however I think Lemmy just depends on the community and instance. I mean, hell, 196 split up kind of over this stuff (or at least, that was the initial trigger imo).
  If you find yourself censored on World, there's quite a few other options (although usually farther left or tankie). Folks just need to host their own versions of things, although we rarely see more conservative folks bothering. Given how federation works, it's actually a wonder there isn't a Truth Social style community out there for most of us to block. >.>
  
  Reddit removes all the time, but they shadow remove so you never get a notification or anything.
  
  Oh, absolutely dude... People on here are absolutely the thinnest skinned I think I've ever seen on the internet, bar none. And they all seem to want to start shit over something and then act astonished and run to mods for help if they get any sort of response in kind.
  Hey, here's a thought: If you wanna talk shit to people, you probably shouldn't be shocked if you get it right back... And if you have to then go get a mod because you're now butthurt over a fight you picked? What, was your mom busy or something? 🤣😂 Cuz that's the exact energy I get from that
