I miss being able to tap 'down' to get to the next chain of comments.
I miss being able to close off an entire chain of comments.

I feel like I've turned on and off everything that should let me have that...

Do you have the navigation bar on? I also set it to not hide automatically.

Have you tried this? Settings shortcut: Comment options > Single click to hide comment
You can active volume button navigation to use them to navigate from top comment to top comment.
This would be super useful to me. Nothing like reading through a thread and finding some drama you want to skip cause it's just way off topic and mostly bickering.
