Talking to people is scary. :(
HELLO NOT LURKING WE JUST HAVE NOTHING USEFUL TO CONTRIBUTE THANKS
I DON'T LIKE POSTING MUCH BECAUSE I AM TRASH
You both should come join us in shitposting. One of us!
Well, I know this comment isn't much, but I have to start somewhere, and at least now I cannot be accused of being a lurker!
I’m so much better at commenting than posting. I have nothing interesting to post!
Same, but commenting is also a good way to contribute. Oh, uh, hi! o/ /lurks
Ok really dumb question (this was an issue for me with Reddit during the before time as well): I seem to only notice threads that have existed for a while, so I normally see something similar to what I would have said already posted as a comment. Should I be using Lemmy differently, to see younger threads?
…and reading further in the comments says sort by new, but I’m already doing that lol
Ok
.
Am not super chatty. Having said that, hello.
Just deleted my reddit account.
alright
I don't have a unique opinion to post if the thread isn't early enough. And the communities that I can provide expert opinions are basically deserted.
Not sure what to post or comment.
I posted because of this post
Peeks from under my rock
I'm doing my part, are you?
Some of us have nothing useful to contribute to society. Please don't shame us.
dont tell me what to do. you are not my real father!
I have nothing to contribute.
Niche communities are still absent, so most of the time Lemmy is just political discussions and Linux memes.
Not interested in any of those
Yeah, I wish there was a more concerted effort to move more communities.
Well then post more things to get mad at geeze. Do you even know how engagement works?
But it is what I do!
Guess I'll come out of the shadows on this one
Fine.
it was like a watershed moment when i realized opossums are just dumb and adorable and not scary at all but i never met an evil one
OK!
Wow, I'll have you know I post a comment maybe once a month. Fine though, I'll be better and make my first post today.
Darn social media asking me to be responsible and contribute back. What do you think you are? Open source software?
👋
okay fine
yes, hello, 1, 2, 3
I want to. But I must say its a bit difficult. Almost all lemmy instances are a specific echo chamber of opinions, thoughts and political views. The moment I say even the smallest thing out of the “norm” im banned.
Same. I came to Lemmy because Reddit sucks, I'm looking for memes, cat videos, humorous and/or thought provoking content.
Instead my all feed is filled with an echo chamber of political content. Not gonna lie, Lemmy is forum that takes itself away too seriously, I don't interact because I don't want to argue politics with strangers online, and I know any differing options get down voted to hell.
I really wish Lemmy had a little more fun engaging, apolitical content. If it did, I'd be all over it.
I know you've probably heard this already, but it really makes a difference:
Curate your feed. My subscribed-feed is all I look at, I have an insanely long community subscription list but it feels truly active and basically no politics (thanks to voyager app's keyword filter and lemmy's community blocking feature).
Also a cool tip: look at profile of users to find interesting / cool communities.
Or, spend your time with us over at !sillydrawingrequests@sopuli.xyz :)
Sounds familiar. Like... hmmm... like Reddit!
Feel free to document those on !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com

Now this, I like
Sorting by new helps, so you don't feel like you're too late to be heard if you comment. Making posts, now that's extra tough.
Much better than screaming into the void of the same stupid jokes and bots on reddit though right?
Indeedly doodly
I actually don't feel that way even on older posts that have already taken off. That's really nice about lemmy.
Lemmy really is a pretty great place
Diagnosis: cat

Doing my best not to lurk
Yeahhhhhhh, I struggle with that a bit because I feel like anything I have to say isn’t worth saying
even just voting helps.
Honestly same, even this replay I hesitated before sending.
You should upload more of your photography stuff!
That is something I’d love to do! I just haven’t gone out in a while to take any pictures.
Look at this useless comment here smh
/s ;-)
my fears have come to fruition 😭😭😭
You can't tell me what to do! I was told that I do not need to do what other people say I need to do! Which I guess means that I do need to do what other people say that I need to do! But then that means that I do not need to do what other people say I need to do! Do do people need I do need people tell do me need!
Have a dramatically lit cat photo!
ok i know i said i would last time but i promise i will this time
What's the line being worshipped in the octagon?
Ladies and gentlemen... we got em.
Too late...
I’m making sure I’m doing my part by posting every dumb thought I have in the comments.
I have been getting more stoned in the past few days, in the hopes to provide more absolutely terrible jokes, however I went too far and binged a bunch of Mr. Rogers videos on YouTube with dabs.
Have you guys seen this man?! Someone this kind actually existed! Like man. Everyone needs to see Mr. Rogers stuff I think, it's like, proper positive and stuff.
if everyone was as kind as that man, I think there would almost be no suffering in the world
An excuse to post a link to this article
ahoy matey
Personal welcome to anyone this post encouraged to sign up. I appreciate you.
Hey I even upvote sometimes!
Half the time I post a comment trying to contribute in some way but get downvotes so I'm scared to post any comments.
Additionally, I never post news articles I see because if the content of the news is bad (eg a news article about something bad google is doing), Ive seen others and myself get downvotes
I just wanted to let you know there is an option in your settings so you don't see upvotes or downvotes.
Lemmy (AFAIK) doesn't even show you your total upvotes (karma... whatever it's called) by default either. None of these imaginary points fucking matter.
So why don't you do yourself a favor and uncheck these boxes and not give a fuck what others think about your comment.
I know I have.
(Lemmy is rad as fuck)
Beehaw.org has disabled the down vote button/doesn't federate down votes. So you could try posting over there, it's pretty great
Counterpoint: By posting things that get downvoted, you still contributed and added to the discussion by exposing people to a viewpoint divergent from the ones they perceive normaly.
Or your contributions are just shit takes. That could be the case too. /s

This, but without a /s
Sometimes you're wrong, sometimes you're talking to assholes.
I absolutely understand that regarding political/news communities, I bet your experience is very different in entertainment/hobbies communities
It's okay, you do already much more than most of us working on Photon

How decedent
Frequent lurker here, I just have such a hard time getting my thoughts out into words that’s relevant to a conversation. Add in an irrational amount of aversion to negative feedback (real or perceived) and it just feels better to just keep scrolling.
One day I’ll get better at this, it’s not easy when my socializing experience has been dominated with negativity both online and offline.
If it helps, people seem to be a lot more open to questions and discussion here than on sites like reddit. Its pretty refreshing.
The thing is, I feel like many people just add whatever they think and want to say to a conversation no matter how relevant or irrelevant it is to the current situation. In the end, I feel like most people on here are civil enough to not be mean-spirited towards one another unless they're talking to bigots and stuff.
I struggle with this quite often too - especially when it comes to topics that can be quite divide and polarising - but I always feel good once I do step out of my comfort zone and post away. There's usually bound to be at least a couple people with whom your comment resonates with. Give it a try maybe - you'd be surprised how well it can go :)
I feel you. I delete like half the comments I post and want to delete another half of what's left before I do, for the same sounding reasons.
I don't think people will be a dick to you on here, and if they are it won't be well received by anyone else.
Same, but I cannot even get to the reply phase. Also I am bad at commenting/posting anything good.
How often did you contemplate posting this comment?
A couple times haha
writes three paragraph comment
edits comment for 10 minutes to make it as succinct as possible
realizes it has nothing to do with parent comment
deletes comment
Back on reddit, a good half of the comments I would have left got deleted as soon as I posted them. Lemmy has forced me to make sure I've said something relevant, because if I leave a comment and then delete it, everyone gets to know that I did that, and that makes me feel even worse than saying something slightly off topic
I mean, if it is not related to a specific "parent comment", you could simply post it as a 1st rank comment to the post instead?
I worry the same way, but mostly just when I'm commenting on something hurtful. Like if a commenter is being agonizingly wrong about something really important, spreading lies, you know the kind. I'll get worked up and start writing a comment, but realize that any point I make can be nitpicked and invalidated even if it's broadly correct. So I don't post those comments.
But when it's not in response to someone being inflammatory, I feel better about just doing my best with what I write. If someone has a correction, well that's a good thing! I'll acknowledge it and edit my comment to include the better info I'm given. I can hope that the people reading it don't see that I was wrong on one point and decide I'm completely wrong because I try to interact respectfully.
I felt this in my bones.
It's ok to be a lurker. Lurkers, I'm happy you're here with us.
And we're here for you.
Hey this user isn’t a lurker!! They’re a big fat phony!!!
Nah you all can have some lurk as a little treat. You deserve it!
But saying anything on the internet is too scary... :(
So brave of you to say what we all only dare to think

But I like being a lurker 😟
Too late, lurkers don't comment!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
I still remember this epic comment from @cm0002@lemmy.world. It's funny because cm0002 is like one of the most active posters I see around.
I don't think making feud posts is contributing.
Why do I too remember that post and the comment, huh, I might be spending a lot of time here
They really upped their game!
Doing my part :) used to be a pathological lurker and Lemmy made me regular commenter and poster :)
No

One quarter of this user's comment history is them explicitly declining to stop lurking lmao
Honestly, that's kind of big dick energy
Gotcha
