7000km^3 lower than just 2004-2013 average. Just a normal summer will set big record low next fall, potentially with blue ocean at north pole, and likely further record lows next winter.
Low ice extent is driven primarily by hot summer arctic ocean that is fed by early springs of last year. Air temperatures are not of extreme record warmth.

On a more serious note, I suspect that this is a part of the reason why we are seeing democracies failing all across the globe - the general populace is too selfish and short-sighted to do anything about what is coming, thus paving the way for people willing to make hard calls (even if at first they seem to be ignoring the climate situation, nonetheless what they pave the way to open up to likely seems like it could be gaining support due to this impending doom scenario looming over the horizon).

To be fair to the Boomers, there has been more change in the last 50 years then all of human history combined. Also, there are errors that even (especially?) the intelligentsia are prone to. Also, Rome fell as well - so even though it happened on their watch, wasn't it inevitable, really?
Certainly I have made mistakes in my own personal lifetime, and I would hate to find out that ending civilization was one of them (but in fairness, it very well may be part of the issue). Like, what if 20 years from now, we were to find out that using Lemmy will have put an end to the freedom of people being able to use the Internet, bc of so many messages about Luigi that kept getting powerful people killed, so "they" start banning the protocol and going after it harder than they ever did piracy (which has always been more of a nudge wink just don't let it get out of hand situation)?

Ecofascism, like fascism, is a dead end. They just accelerate the destruction. The climate is global, nobody is going to escape climate chaos while remaining on this planet.

I think people greatly misunderstood me here: I'm not arguing FOR it!?! (Though I can see how the language of "hard calls" would lead to that impression, so that's on me). I am merely trying to understand the potential motivations of the actual people who matter, in terms of shaping empires (since apparently the populace no longer does, at least in many places e.g. in both South - and increasingly we are now seeing North also - America). Ofc these are trends not firm facts, e.g. Canada may have its democracy imperilled but it is nowhere close to what seems to be going on inside the USA, or e.g. Brazil.
But ofc I could be way off. In the past we had many different sources of news media outlets, while in the modern world we seem to have far fewer choices, curated for us by oligarchs (so... same as it ever was, but again, with fewer options, so representing a difference in degree rather than in kind). By holding hostage whatever the actual Truth is, and replacing it with their own curated version, they influence societies to such a large degree that the common man (or woman) no longer "matters", by comparison.
And I was thinking that in the past, democracies seem to have been fashionable to those oligarchs. It produced things like cures for various cancers that no amount of individual funding as a patron was going to make happen.
Whereas now... a new, different set of oligarchs no longer seems to want what democracy can provide. Either due to ignorance or... whatever.

A lot of the people being voted in will just create bunkers for themselves to survive a cataclysm and leave the rest of us to die.
People are being more selfish than usual because they have internet algorithms that will tell them that they're in the right. The internet has made people incredibly spiteful. To the point they're willing to screw themselves over to make things worse for someone else.
Bunkers are a scam. They're fine for some occasional wildfire or flood, but not for climate chaos and all the damage that will do to society. Having a bunker just means you die later, perhaps after you eat your bunker mates, or they eat you. It's not like they'll "repopulate" after, climate change is going to go on long after 2100 and these inbred clowns will just inbreed more until they die off.
