This is called 'recuperation'. A classic form of coopting radical disruption back into the folds of the status quo. Think Napster > iTunes > Spotify as one example.
- All centralized services. The fediverse is theoretically resistant to that kind of process.

I got an invite to SURF but you can't accept it without a Google account. DOA.
- Will stuff that they don't accept any old email address. Did they offer other major service providers (MS, Apple) of only Google?
