Cool bro, nice definitely real data about animals existing in nature you paid to put on that billboard. Now do cars
Incidentally, I was curious what this number actually is, but apparently no one is even attempting to keep track of how many deer are injured/killed by cars, despite frequently involving a police report and/or insurance claim
I can literally see a dead deer every few miles in some places. I imagine a portion of them are hit by larger trucks where an insurance claim isn't necessary.
The only kind of shocking "gore-style" videos I ever enjoyed when I was young were animals fucking up humans who were hunting or tormenting them. Honestly that shit never gets old for me. When those pics of that matador with a bull horn going in his neck and out his mouth my only reaction was
Are they suggesting that wolves be eliminated so these monsters have more deer to hunt? Also don't areas with deer population in US often complain about there being too many deer around?
Either that or they want to be given the go ahead to hunt wolves. And yeah, overpopulation of deer is bad for ecosystems as they clear out underbrush and prevent new growth trees from forming. This both limits biodiversity but also sets up a long term problem of barren landscapes when the old growth trees do finally die.
Hunting as a way to control animal populations is an important talking point by gun and hunting groups. If ecosystems can be put into a more natural equilibrium by reintroducing apex predators, then they lose this talking point.
It's partially true, something needs to kill and scare deer or they'll starve out & destroy the habitat of every other animal in the area, but yes, wolves are waaaaaay fucking better at it and these idiots don't want em. If we were earnestly trying to restore a habitat it would be good to hunt there until the wolves get their population going
Yeah deer are one of the only animals whose populations are higher than pre-Colombian exchange. We basically created their ideal environment across the entire country, forest at the edge of open field.
The most common causes of death for deer are, in order: Human hunting, car collisions, starvation, and last is predation (predation does outrank car collision in certain areas with few people and few cars). Very few animals are actually capable of taking down an adult deer, so if they survive to adulthood they’re almost guaranteed to be killed by a human or by living long enough they wear down their teeth until they can’t chew food anymore and starve to death.
"Isn't it terrible what those wolves due to deer" says person who is mad he only gets one tag this year because wolves actually naturally control deer populations.
:gulag: for all of them. Ranchers, whiny ass deer hunters, all of them. Deer are so absurdly overpopulated that they've all got covid and zombie prions and they're destroying native plant life causing serious ecological problems and some asshole paid for a billboardz?
hot take: deer hunting is good as a substitute to fill an ecological niche while predators rebound, but whiny ass deer hunting is snowflakish and must be re-educated
Do the wolves kill so many fawns because the hunters are out there shooting all of their parents that might be able to protect them? The bucks have those antlers for a reason
Unfortunately a lot of hunters want to hunt wolves because they see them as "taking their kills" whether that be elk or deer. Its fucking awful for the ecosystem and actually makes the deer population worse not to mention our Indigenous people are against it
Yeah the slowly rotting and festering countries in northern europe are doing this now. The conservative government in sweden is selling hunting licenses (trophy hunting) for (locally) endangered species like wolves and lynxes. Norway is doing something similar. I wish every trophy hunter a very naked-in-the-snow-and-pursued-by-wolves winter season
