In fairness, Russia expected to win the war in 3 days. Most serious analysts thought the war would be over quickly and Ukraine would be fighting as insurgents.
The fact that the front lines are basically static three years later with minimal territory taken by Russia is insane. No one saw that coming in the beginning.
