I don't know who chose that headlining image of him pointing (and looking) at the sun, but it's perfect.
I'm imagining thousands of Americans doing the same and some shooting firearms at the sun too.
This is one policy I would like to see followed through with.
Literally the only good idea he's ever had.
He also promised to legalize weed. He said the left would oppose it because it came from him. Then everyone said yes please. Then we didn't hear anything else about it.
In 2016 he promised universal Healthcare on accident describing how he would fix Obamacare. Then we didn't hear anything else about it.
It's not even his idea, though. It's been introduced by Marco Rubio 4 times, starting in 2018.
To be specific, we make it such that the current daylight savings time is the norm.
This was on the docket to be voted on in 2023 (i think, could have been 2022) and it never made it to the floor. Why? His cronies. They just let it fall by the side, probably so they could do it now. I’m so sick and tired of this shit show if a govt. Failed fucking state.
This needs to be top comment. So many little things he does that sane people like are just things Republicans blocked until they could be the ones to do the thing.
Any state can abolish DST on its own, some have already done so.
There was a bill in Congress to put the entire country on permanent DST (which states can't do on their own). It died because (a) some states don't want permanent DST, and (b) doctors have found that permanent DST is less healthy than no DST.
In fact, Congress already tried permanent DST briefly in the 70s. Some children were killed in early morning traffic accidents, schools responded by shifting their winter hours later, and the public generally turned against it.
Would that even work on Indian reservations - can congress override their choices?
Besides impotently complaining about it on the internet, what else can we do about it?
Impotently complain harder
Seriously, this was suppose to have happened like five years ago!
Will y'all shut the fuck up and act like you don't want this? You're going to ruin it.
We absolutely need to start protesting this so he makes it a priority.
This is literally how to shape his entire presidency and keep him from completely destroying the country. This move right here, every time.
Let’s make a list of things and how to complain and stick to the script.
I’ll go first. Man, I love tariffs!
The only way that Democrats will eventually come out on top here is massive tariffs. We have to get the word out and thank Donald Trump for his concept of a plan on tariffs.
Dang, I sure do love that Obama created daylight savings time. I hope it never goes away. Thanks Obama!
Some, if not all people agree that this makes him the YUGEST PRESIDENT OF ALL TIME
To avoid confusion, all of the US will be on DTT (Donald Trump Time), which will vary based on where he currently is.
Do not give him ideas, please.
He was quoted out of context. He wants to separately eliminate daylight, savings, and time.
Works on contingency? No, money down!
I want it to stay sprung forward, can't remember if that's DST or non. I feel like I'm in the minority, but fuck if I care if it's dark in the morning I want sunlight for longer once I'm done working...
DST is sprung forward. It happens in the summer. Standard time is what the northern hemisphere is on now in the winter.
Fun fact. In the winter the sun is pretty close to its highest at Noon but I the summer that happens at 1:00 pm.
I suppose it makes some difference how far East to West you are in your timezone too, but this time of year I'm dark on my way to work and dark on my way home, if we were still in DST I'd have an hour of sunlight still after work. It's only about 6 weeks that are that extreme for me but I'd still prefer DST. And I love the long summer nights when it's light until almost 10 lol
The EU's proposed DST abolishment proposal would go to permanent DST time, too.
Unfortunate that it has been in the back burner for so long. It would genuinely be a good boon for the EU tech industry to abolish DST lol.
Same. This was part of Rubio's "Sunshine Protection" think a couple years back, but does NOT seem to be part of that Trump has discussed so far.
Well, good.
Seeing a lot of talk on here about keeping Standard or DST.
Oh my God for the love of all that's holy just let them pick one!
I don't care if the sun comes up at 2:00am or 2:00pm or even if the sun fuckin' sets at 12:00 noon. Just pick a time and stick with it. Holy shitsnax.
Upvote for shitsnax... sploosh
Broken clock.
Twice a year?
“Oh, yum! I found a chocolate chip in this bucket of catshit that the ruling class is shoveling down my throat!”
If I remember correctly, the issue last time is that they wanted us on permanent Daylight Savings Time, instead of Standard Time. So I expect Trump to force the U.S. onto permanent DST, just because all science says it would be worse for us than going to Standard.
I hate Trump as much as the next guy, but I want permanent DST. I want it to be light when I get home so I can spend some time outside without a flashlight. I don't care if it's dark in the morning, I'm working. Don't tell me to just work different hours, I already work 6am-3pm, which is the earliest I'm allowed at my current job, and a lot earlier than allowed by many jobs. I still only get about an hour before dark where I live.
How is it worse? I want permanent DST so bad
Fuck that. Clock noon and solar noon need to diverge less, not more.
Science says it’s better to have day light in the morning and dark at night
But people aren’t waking up at 5am and going to bed at 5pm so it really doesn’t enforce standard time
Fuck, I hate it when he's right.
In other news, RFK has recommended extending this to eliminate both daylight and time.
We need to keep daylight savings and eliminate standard time. We're on standard time right now. I hate it getting dark at 5pm.
While most people seem to say they prefer DST, research strongly supports permanent standard time.
I remember seeing some research draw this conclusion as well, but IMO it's the wrong conclusion since a lot of the data in the studies I saw seemed to indicate the issues stemmed from the actual switch, not whether we did things an hour earlier or later. It's that transition period that fucks things up. While I'd prefer permanent DST, I don't care that much. I just want the endless, stupid dance to stop and never switch again.
For sure, it's depressing as hell for it to get dark so early.
Fuck DST. I hate it staying dark in the morning.
Fite me.
"Flying groin kick!"
Seriously. DST fucks with my sleep schedule so badly when I have to get up before sunrise...
As someone in daylight savings time now, it's still bright outside at 830pm and that needs to stop
As someone who doesn't like the sun that thing needs to stop
Can we get rid of timezones and switch to UTC please
I don't want it to ever be -03:00. That shit is confusing as hell.
Lol I think it would just be 3 am or 9pm depending on which way you are talking
I mean, I have no great love for DST, but I have no faith that they can do anything but completely fuck it up somehow. Whatever results will be at best, no measurable improvement, but at least a monumental pain in the ass for those who have to do the work to keep shit on schedule during the morass.
They're going to move it 30 mins to meet in the middle...
I mean it seems to work for India, Nepal, etc.
If they're using the 2022 bill they're already fucking it up. Kids are going to be walking to school in the dark in winter and get hit by cars because they want to pretend that we're a few thousand miles east of where we actually are.
So maybe we could do the other thing that scientists have been saying, and make school start later. Obviously just one of the things that would need to be fixed, because school is currently a glorified daycare (because both parents are working, yay) and changing the times would fuck up parents' lives.
God I hope he doesn’t ruin this long overdue improvement.
Lol trump doing something i actually support
I wonder how he'll make it worse.
He'll lock it into non-dst to the sun won't rise until 8:30 in the winter in the middle latitude states.
But dst doesn't change what the sun does. Just the arbitrary number us humans put on it. Not changing a pattern 2 times a year seems great! Who cares what number it is? I used to love in Minnesota, DST and short winter days, now I live in Arizona, we have plenty of sun and no DST. The sun rises at 5am in Arizona in the summer. But that changes nothing about my day.
He's going to rename it Trump Time.
Donald Savings Time
Aotus says a lot of things including how he would like to bang his daughter.
They say even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time.
A bill has been floating in the house and senate for a few years. Trump could have got it done back in 2019. So why is this the only thing he can pass?
Oh, I guess he’s ok then.
Naa wasn't even his idea. He's just taking credit for something that's already been dragging out for years.
This sucks because it means he absolutely definitely will not do this.
It's just two weeks away bro, I swear
Every time this topic comes up I wonder how many computer systems this will break. Maybe we find out soon if this is really realized.
I'd bet it actually simplifies as least as many things as it breaks. Basically all computers already keep track of time as a count of seconds since a UTC epoch anyway, and then do timezone conversions on top of that.
Well, in essence yes. But I have seen enough mishandling and homegrown stuff of custom date-time calculations that this could get interesting. I suspect that there are a lot of systems where the TZ database is never updated which at least will result in shifted displayed local time.
Also, it is fun to get data from old programs and also from userinput where the actual offset has to be guessed from the timezone. And if that conversion data is old, fun is had. It does not matter how time is represented internally in this case.
There are probably hundreds of thousands of devices out there that are smart enough to know about time zones but old enough that there no chance of a software update, for example APC UPSs and power strips used in data centres world wide and years beyond end of support.
As long as they can get tzdata / Olsen db updates before the first change, there's usually no problem. But, I'm sure there are still devices out there using the OLD US switchover dates from the Bush era, because they have a different, possibly "hard-coded" rule set.
It wont be too bad. If you mean computers used commercially, Unix keeps a running total of seconds since the epoch and DST only affects whats displayed as time. Nothing will fundamentally change for these systems. In windows server products it wont be a problem, and some windows clients use an automatic patch process. Air gapped computers may have some hacky process around DST, but its a pretty solved problem.
Probably the only good thing he'd ever do, look forward to seeing how they fuck it up.
I find going on and off DST to be kind of a nuisance, but I don't have strong feelings about it one way or the other. It seems like the experience varies from place to place, and your region's distance to the equator is an important factor. The closer you are to the equator, the less necessary DST is.
Historically, some of the regions that went off of DST much prefer it that way, and never looked back. But others regretted opting out of it, and went back to doing it again after everyone complained about it.
I'm sure 47 will make it all about him, whatever he does. And it will probably be a chaotic mess of software patches when they try to implement it. There will be far worse problems to deal with during the Stupid Ages, but throw this one on the pile I guess.
The EU parliament had a vote to abolish DST, and it passed. They just forgot to hammer out the details, then COVID and Ukraine happened, so focus shifted.
I hope they'll pick up the ball again at some point.
Perhaps if the US does it, they'll follow. And then anywhere else left will do the same and we can be done with this nonsense.
The decision is made. It just takes a while for the 27 countries to get their local legislation up to speed. Many haven't decided whether they'd want to be on standard time or +1. There's some business advantage to being on the same timezone as your neighbors.
And then software manufacturers need some heads up to get their shit together.
Good
It’s weird how I watched VEEP last year and here it is coming true.
Good
wow that guy has my vote! 😀
It's the American way, every four years Congress gets one thing done.
Great policy. Misogynistic, racists, liar will say anything for attention, tho.
If he doesn't, I'll shoot him myself. Canada will probably come up with some other shitty excuse once they can't say they do it for US trade any more though.
I don't really like having clock shifts, but I will say that it's less obnoxious in 2024 when most of my clocks update automatically.
In, say, 1990, it was an ongoing headache to have to manually fiddle all the timekeeping devices twice a year. Invariably, there'd be a timepiece or two that I'd forget about and not update until months later. Now I typically don't even notice, just have one slightly-groggy day a year and one day a year when I wake up early.
I have that internal clock punishment thing going on. Since the last change I've been on time twice, and I probably won't be on track until it changes back and ruins me again. I used to forcefully hack it by having energy drinks for a week or so but these days one or two of those and blood comes out. At least at my current job nobody will hassle me about my hours if I still get the work done, but I miss being able to maintain a schedule that makes sense.
Then there's my animals. They will never understand and give me the look of "come on, this wasnt funny the last 5 years so why are you doing this again?"
The far-right former brasilien president did the same
Based
Didn't that little rascal George Bush 2 try this and fail? Expecting the same results.
Biden did aswell
It's funny because extending DST is the only productive thing W. did too
Gonna piss off the farmers, until they get their subsidiary check for growing corn (for high fructose corn syrup) instead of feeding the population.
Everything will piss off the farmers.
Removing daylight saving is actually something they want, because it fucks with their routine, but sure, they'll be pissed off about removing it too.
Aye, there is a large coalition of farmers that typically remind people their day doesn't typically revolve around the time we arbitrarily set, but the sun's presence or not. They can plan for the store to be open whenever, but working when you can see (and/or it's not too cold/hot) is immutable.
This has been bugging me of late so I'll ask here even though FTR I hate that I agree with Trump:
Why don't we just split the difference and offset by 30 min for the whole year/permanently?
God no. The math with timezones is painful enough without having to deal with half hour offsets.
Actually, there are some timezones with offsets of half or even quarter hours, but the company where I work in software engineering doesn't do any business in those timezones, so I've never had to deal with that particular brand of madness.
Just get rid of DST. It was never a good idea. "Noon" should mean that the sun is directly overhead (or at least directly overhead east-west-wise if not north-south-wise) and "midnight" should be the midpoint between any two adjacent noons. (Ok, yes, if you live on the extreme eastern or western edge of a timezone, then at noon, the position of the sun may be up to 7.5° off of directly overhead east-west-wise. But yeah.)
Just adopt GMT and make time meaningless.
Nah, not GMT. UTC. It's the more accurate successor, and all computers already use it.
Not to mention, everyone will always know what time you are talking about anywhere in the world, and based on your own experience, you know if it will be during the day or not.
Timezones will no longer matter, making software handling time so much easier.
I understand what you mean, BUT I live in AZ and Im not going to have AZ be both 30 minutes ahead of Cali, 30 minutes behind Utah, and an hour and 30 behind New Mexico. No, you all either fall in line with how time is supposed to work or you can keep doing your shitty Daylight Savings bullshit
Because compromise makes neither side truly happy
We are already trying to compromise with switch back and forth.
30 minutes just makes it over complicated and satisfies neither side
For better reasons go here. https://savestandardtime.com/ @SaveStandard@universeodon.com
It’s too confusing for him.
Permanent Standard Time people are weird. I do not give a shit if its dark when I'm going to work, but seeing the sun going down at 3pm fucks with my mental health. Winter is miserable purely for that reason, I can deal with the cold, not that.
Isn't standard time when the sun sets later? I remember after our dst change the sun goes down much quicker
No, think of it from the same point. On standard time, the sun would be setting at, let's say 1642 hours. If on daylight savings time, the sun would be setting at 1742 hours.
